UFC 156 predictions

The UFC returns for its third event in consecutive weeks and it's a big one - the promotion's annual Super Bowl weekend event in Las Vegas.

This year's edition features a "superfight" of sorts as UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will defend his title, welcoming former UFC lightweight king Frankie Edgar to the division. Alistair Overeem will also return to action for the first time after a year-long layoff. He will face fellow Strikeforce import Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva for a shot at Cain Velasquez and the UFC heavyweight belt.

My predictions are after the jump.

UFC veterans Victor Valamaki and Razak Al-Hassan were scheduled to fight yesterday at Aggression FC 14 in Edmonton, Alberta. The fight was cancelled when doctors refused to allow Valimaki to fight.

Valimaki apologized on Facebook, “Sorry guys, doc wouldn’t let me fight due to kidney failure from too big of a weight cut. Thanks everyone for the support, I feel like shit for letting everyone down. Time for a move up in weight so watch out heavyweights!”

Yves Edwards and Jeremy Stephens will finally lock horns at UFC on Fox 5 as it’s being reported that Stephens will step in and replace John Cholish who was forced to withdraw with a groin injury. Stephens and Edwards were originally slated to fight at UFC on FX 5 but the fight was scrapped when Stephens was arrested on an old warrant. [MMA Junkie]

Edwards received "Submission of the Night" honors for choking McKenzie out cold with a rear-naked choke to end their lightweight tilt. The bout also earned "Fight of the Night" commendations as well, leaving McKenzie with some extra cash too.

Melvin Guillard promises that he'll be either fighting for the UFC lightweight title or going undefeated for a second straight year in 2011. He's off to a running start.

Guillard put on one of his most impressive performances to date, easily dispatching of the world-ranked Evan Dunham with a barrage of punches and knees in the first round of their main event bout at the UFC's second "Fight for the Troops" event at Fort Hood, TX.

"I want my title shot. I'm the dark horse in this game at 155. No disrespect to anybody in my weight class, but I am the best 155-pound fighter in the UFC," Guillard said after the fight. "You keep lining them up and I'll keep knocking them down, and I will go undefeated in 2011, and I will get a title by the end of 2011 or by 2012 at the latest."
