UFC heavyweight contender Fabricio Werdum has reportedly stated that he will return to action at UFC 90: Silva vs. Cote on October 25th, where he’ll likely take on Brazilian fighter Junior “Cigano” dos Santos in a fight that could earn him a shot at the promotion’s heavyweight title next year.
Werdum, who also confirmed that he has signed a new five-fight contract with the UFC, did so in a recent interview with Tatame.com. Werdum states that while dos Santos may not end up being the actual opponent he faces in his next bout, he will be fighting at UFC 90, which will have him complete the last fight on his old contract with the company.
“I was going to fight at October 18th at London, but I made a new five fights contract and they changed it to October 25th at Chicago, probably against Junior Cigano,” Werdum said in the interview. “It’s not 100% right that I’ll face him, but I’ll surely fight at October 25th. It’s my last fight under the old contract and, with a victory, my first new contract’s fight will be for the title.”
After consecutive wins over Gabriel Gonzaga and Brandon Vera, Werdum has bounced back from a disappointing UFC debut against former champion Andrei Arlovski and has solidified himself as the unanimous choice to face the winner of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Frank Mir’s championship affair later this year. “Cigano” last fought on May 25th, earning a TKO victory over Geronimo Mondragon due to a cut at a Demo Fight event in Salvador, Brazil.
