WEC middleweight title holder Paulo Filho came in an astounding seven pounds over the 185 lb. limit at the weigh-ins for WEC 36 on Tuesday afternoon, putting his championship rematch against Team Quest product Chael Sonnen in jeopardy.
After the two-hour allotted time limit, Filho was only able to cut down to 188 lbs, making his showdown against Sonnen a non-title affair. Sonnen will be awarded 25% of Filho’s purse.
In addition, featherweight title challenger Mike Brown came in a half pound over the featherweight limit and jiu-jitsu wizard Rani Yahya weighed-in one pound over the bantamweight requirements for his fight against Yoshiro Maeda. Brown was quickly able to shed the extra baggage while Maeda has agreed to face Yahya without forcing him to cut weight again.
Complete weigh-in results are after the jump.

I wonder if Filho’s inability to make 185 one last time had anything to do with the emotional problems that he’s been going through too. With that said, I still think he wins this fight. Sonnen is obviously going to take him down and even three rounds are too long for an aggressive wrestler to be on the ground with Filho, let alone five.

I guess after Filho basically got his ass kicked in that last fight and won because of a controversial stoppage, it’s not in his best interest to fight Sonnen at 185, where he could likey lose his title. Then again, if he loses it…he won’t feel pressure from Joe Silva and the UFC management to fight Anderson in a unification bout. Either way he’s not in an enviable situation right now

Tough situation. Filho has repeatedly said that this would be his last fight at 185. Its a shame he couldn’t make it one last time. He has stated tonight that if he loses, he’ll give the belt to Chael anyway. Terrible job by Filho and I feel bad for Sonnen having to deal with this garbage.
That being said, I hope he pulls Sonnen’s arm off with an armbar and beats him with it. Sonnen is basically a journeyman who talks about how great he is all the time. Sorry, IMO he verbally tapped when he screamed last time. He talks way too much smack for someone who usually loses every time he steps up in competition. Not always, but most of the time.
