Weekend Recap: UFC Veterans Victorious

A quarter of UFC veterans earned victories at Superior Cage Combat's second-ever showing on Saturday night at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

Josh Neer defeated WEC veteran Blas Avena via TKO in the first round in the show's main event. Former UFC welterweight title challenger John Alessio also submitting last-minute replacement opponent Shawn Fitzsimmons in the opening frame as well.

In addition, Team Alpha Male member Justin Buchholz grinded out a unanimous decision over Thiago Meller and John Gunderson scored an emotional victory James Birdsley, submitting his foe with a guillotine choke in the second round just days after his trainer, Shawn Tompkins, passed away.

Sylvia, McCorkle Earn Needed Wins

Former two-time UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia bounced back with a dominating first-round win over Patrick Barrentine at a "Fight Tour" event in Rockford, Illinois on Saturday night. Sylvia scored an early takedown and finished Barrentine off with ground and pound just over three minutes into the bout.

Sean McCorkle earned his second straight win following his UFC release, submitting Alex Rozman via punches just a minute and a half into their heavyweight contest at Legends of Fighting 48 on Saturday.

Nelson, Newton Victorious at Shark Fights 18

"Ultimate Fighter" product Shane Nelson defeated opponent Aaron Witherspoon via second-round TKO after Witherspoon sustained a knee injury, allowing Nelson to pounce on him in the main event of Shark Fights 18, which served as the promotion's first venture into the state of Nevada.

In other action, Emmanuel Newton used superior wrestling skills to win a unanimous nod over Ricky Shivers, jiu-jitsu player Roy Boughton stopped Adriano Camolese with strikes within two rounds and Dave Huckaba earned a stand-up filled decision win over fellow journeyman Ruben Villareal.

Brazilian veteran heavyweight Geronimo "Mondragon" dos Santos dispatched of Washington Gigante at Iron Man Championship 11 on Thursday at the Hangar Convention Center in Belem, Para, Brazil. It was the third win in a row for dos Santos, who has been extremely active as of late, winning seven out of his last nine since falling to Josh Barnett last summer... Bellator veteran Alonzo Martinez won a three-round unanimous decision over Ted Worthington at "Disorderly Conduct: Respect is Earned" in Omaha, Nebraska on Friday. Journeyman welterweight Matt Delanoit also submitted Rico Washington Sr with a first-round rear-naked-choke at the event as well.

Unbeaten middleweight prospect Marcelo "Magrao" Guimaraes grabbed Jungle Fight's inaugural middleweight belt at Jungle Fight 31 on Saturday, choking Lucas Rota unconscious in the second round and also reportedly asking for a shot in the UFC during his post-fight interview... PRIDE Fighting Championships veteran and former Olympic gold medalist judoka Pawel Nastula stopped Andrzej Wronski on first-round strikes at All Sports Promotion's "Nastula vs. Wronski event on Friday.
