WEC 38: Varner vs. Cerrone Live Results

We will be going live at 7:00 PM ET with live results of WEC 38: Varner vs. Cerrone, which takes place at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, California. The show will be televised live on Versus in the United States and on TSN in Canada.

The event is headlined by Jamie Varner defending his WEC lightweight title against Donald Cerrone. A rematch between former WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber and former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver will take place as well.

Main Card:

Rolando Perez vs Jose Aldo

Round 1: Aldo misses witha combination to start things off. Aldo follows up with a hard leg kick that lands. Both fighters are quickly getting in and out with their combinations. Aldo rushes Perez with a flurry. Aldo partially catches Perez in the ribs with a spinning back kick. Aldo throws a combination and almost lands a head kick. He then comes with a flying knee but Perez catches it. Perez tries a head kick of his own. Perez lands a right. Aldo is continually landing right leg kicks. Perez lands a nice body shot. Aldo connects with a stiff right. Aldo backs Perez against the cage with another head kick, but it’s partly blocked. Perez drops down for a body shot and Aldo blasts him with a knee to the chin. Perez flops to the canvas and Aldo pounces on him, pounding away with punches until referee Jon Schorle steps in and stops the fight. Good pace to start the night.

Winner: Jose Aldo - TKO (Strikes)

Mike Campbell vs. Danillo Villefort

Round 1: Campbell presses forward and misses with a wide left hook. Villefort catches a Campbell kick but Campbell drops him with a left hand. Campbell picks Villefort up and Villefort works for a triangle while they exchange punches in an awkward position. Campbell slams Villefort down and throws a barrage of punches. They scramble and Villefort works for a leg lock. Campbell escapes and Villefort stands up before getting taken back down again. Villefort uses a kneebar to takes Campbell’s back. They scramble and stand again and Villefort barely misses with a head kick. Villefort judo tosses Campbell to the ground and immediately mounts him. Campbell gives up his back and Villefort punches away from behind with small shots. Josh Rosenthal asks Campbell to fight back multiple times but Campbell continues to cover up and the fight is stopped.

Winner: Danillo Villefort - TKO (Strikes)

Jens Pulver vs. Urijah Faber

Round 1: They measure each other up to start th efight. Pulver catches a Faber kick and throws him to the ground. Faber gets back up and they grapple in tight for a moment before separating. Faber throws a right and presses Pulver against the cage. Faber hurts Pulver with a left hand to the body and Pulver starts to retreat bent over. Faber follows up with a flurry of punches that send Pulver to the mat. Faber jumps on Pulver, locks in a tight guillotine choke, and forces the tap.

Winner: Urijah Faber - Submission (Guillotine Choke)

Jamie Varner vs. Donald Cerrone

Round 1: Both are content to size each other up during the opening seconds. Cerrone lands a body kick that backs Varner up. Varner misses with a right hook. Cerrone checks two straight Varner kicks. They go toe-to-toe with simultaneous lefts and rights. but Varner takes Cerrone down. Cerrone pulls a high rubber guard and works for a triangle but Varner slams him down. Cerrone again works for an inverted triangle but Varner gets out of the hold and starts to rain down punches. Varner continues to work a ground-and-pound attack while a bump on Cerrone’s head starts to swell. Varner stands and connects with some more shots but Cerrone gets back to his feet. Cerrone clinches and lands a knee followed by a left hand. Varner throws a head kick just before the horn sounds to end the round. Great action. MMA on Tap scores the round 10-9 Varner.

Round 2: Cerrone connects with a couple of kicks to start the round, but Varner takes him down again. They scramble and Varner lands a right hand while Cerrone is standing up. Varner misses with a big right. Varner lands a jab and the two exchange body kicks. Cerrone rushes Varner with a combination but gets taken down once again. Varner connects with more shots from the top position. They scramble and Cerrone gets back to his feet again. They exchange leg kicks. Cerrone lands two more after that. Cerrone clips Varner with a few punches. Varner misses with another big right hand. Cerrone momentarily stuffs a Varner takedown attempt but ends up on his back. He locks in a triangle choke on Varner but there are only seconds left in the round and Varner survives. MMA on Tap scores the round 10-9 Cerrone.

Round 3: Both fighters smile at each other at the start of the third round. They pause for a moment and Varner wipes his hand on the mat before they restart. Cerrone slips after throwing a left high kick but gets back up. Varner lands a left hand and then chases Cerrone with a flurry. Varner then takes Cerrone down again and lands in half-guard. Both of Cerrone’s eyes are swelling. Varner drops back for a guillotine choke but Cerrone gets out of it and ends up on top of Varner before they stand. Varner lands another left hand. Cerrone paws away with the jab and keeps distance between him and Varner with combinations and a head kick attempt. Varner rushes in and scores another takedown. The round ends with Varner punching away at Cerrone against the cage. MMA on Tap scores the round 10-9 Varner.

Round 4: After settling in for the round, Varner lands a clean kick to Cerrone’s head but Cerrone just shakes it off. Both press forward with combinations but neither land anything of note. Cerrone tries a jumping knee that Varner moves away from. Varner lands a kick to the body and Cerrone responds with the same. Varner scores yet another takedown and Cerrone pulls guard. Varner is content to just control Cerrone and put forth much less offense compared to the earlier rounds. Cerrone pushes Varner away with his legs and both stand up. Cerrone lands a leg kick and Varner brings the fight back to the canvas. Varner stands and Cerrone grazes him with a couple of up-kicks. Varner jumps back down into Cerrone’s guard and controls him for the remainder of the round. MMA on Tap scores the round 10-9 Varner.

Round 5: The final round begins with a hug between the two. Cerrone stalks Varner but gets taken down again. They exchange punches on the ground until Cerrone pushes Varner away and somersaults to his feet. Cerrone turns the tide and scores his first takedown of the fight. Varner tries to stand up and Cerrone inadvertently clips Varner in the face with a knee. Rosenthal stops the fight and gives a dazed Varner time to recover. Varner sits up for a moment but then slumps back down in pain. Rosenthal waves off the fight but deems the blow unintentional. An emotional Varner says that he can’t see and apologizes numerous times. It is announced that because the foul was accidental, the judges’ scorecards are tallied up. MMA on Tap scores the round 10-9 Varner and the fight 49-46 for Varner as well. The judges are split but Varner is awarded a split decision.
