The overnight ratings are in from EliteXC’s “Unfinished Business” show on CBS last night and the numbers aren’t very eye-popping to say the least. Those who predicted that the show wouldn’t do even close to as well as it did during EliteXC’s network televsion debut earlier this year were correct. It looks like MMA over-saturation and a lack of advertising might have done this card in from the start.
The numbers explained via here:
EliteXC Saturday Night Fights without any buzz surrounding Kimbo Slice performed much worse without Kimbo than it did with him. That airing back on May 31, 2008 scored 4.3 million viewers and a 1.9/6 among 18-49 year olds and since the Kimbo Slice bout for that airing aired past primetime (11p) the most viewed portion wasn’t included. But lacking any Kimbo anticipation, last night’s fights pulled a mere 2.62 million and a 1.0/3 from 9pm-11pm.
Bryan Alvarez also reports that as of right now, the show did a 1.9 rating overnight. However the number should bump to 2.0 after the rest of the numbers come in. While the numbers aren’t completely terrible for a Saturday night, CBS likely isn’t pleased that MMA, which is supposed to be America’s hottest growing sport, isn’t exactly delivering for them.

...to follow up, after browsing through my MMA RSS Feeds, it appears that the show was pretty good, if not successful.

Elite xc is stupid for marketing kimbo cause hIS lack of “MMA”.. Just cause he use to be a street fighter and ko almost everybody that walks in front of him. Doesnt mean he knows his shit inside the cage.. Hes going to get raped soon by A wrstler or someone whos completely awsoem on the ground.. And then where will his name be?? I dunno about you guys but i dont like seeing sloppy tired out fights especially in the 2nd round.. What you said is someone who wants money not good fights.. Go wear your business suit somewhere else.
Forum trolls WTF.. hypo.

This post is for the forum trolls that just don’t understand why Kimbo is making the big paychecks.
No, it’s to report on the ratings, which many were predicting would be down due not only to no huge name draw, but also the way the first show was received - poorly, at best. They tried to sell one fighter with the first show, and then gave it too much of a circus feel. It’s not that they shouldn’t have taken advantage of Kimbo’s name, it’s that they didn’t do anything else, and the production wasn’t professional enough.
On a sidenote, I hope that EliteXC hasn’t tainted tv networks perception on MMA, thinking it can’t be mainstream enough to cut it on primetime national tv.
Not a sidenote at all, to us. That’s why we’ve been focusing on this sort of thing. MMA’s attempted transition to broadcast televsion is huge for the sport. With the presentation and ratings of EliteXC, it’s not going to be easy for other organizations to win over another network (outside of the UFC).

eliteXc had a lower numbers this time, not cuz Kimbo, but because their show sucks, PERIOD.
Shamrock and the other dude that with him are sooo f’n bad, wow. The show moves at snail pace and has some of the worst transistion between fights i’ve ever seen.
after the kimbo show, more than half(hell prob like 98%) of the real MMA fans, like me
, said “eliteXc show was garbage ...”
and like them i didn’t watch this show, well actually i DVR’d it n watched it last night lol.
Plus showing a show at 9pm pst really isn’t primetime in my eyes.

Its like watching wrestling.. The announcers are idiots and completely make stuff or they just dont know whats going on.. I watched one before kimbo was even on there and the guy said he was going for a kamora when he was actually defending himself by grabbing his arm. And whats with the basketball cheerleaders.. At least put pole dancers on the side of the ring during the fights just incase we see shit fights..

What I realized after watching the Affliction show is that a large part of why I enjoy MMA events is production, UFC does a great job putting together the event, filling the gaps with good interviews/video, as well as pretty good commentary. EliteXC’s production is brutal, I will say it’s better then Affliction’s which was borderline amateur, but there is a reason why the UFC is the top dog, and it’s not just because of their talent pool…

This post is for the forum trolls that just don’t understand why Kimbo is making the big paychecks. It’s not always about who is the best, it is about who is the most marketable. It is much easier to sell stars, than to sell fighters.
On a sidenote, I hope that EliteXC hasn’t tainted tv networks perception on MMA, thinking it can’t be mainstream enough to cut it on primetime national tv. It upsets me that MMA doesn’t get to put it’s “best foot forward” on these shows, and is degraded to a B-grade product.
Admittedly I didn’t get to see the broadcast (I had girlfriend duties to take care of…yikes).
