The Ultimate Fighting Championship held its traditional pre-fight press conference for Saturday’s UFC 89 today in Birmingham, England and while UFC UK President Marshall Zelaznik also gave his usual state of the UFC’s overseas division address, he revealed that the organization is targeting a surprising country for a planned return to Europe in the first half of next year - Finland.
From Fighters Only Magazine:
“Italy, Germany and Finland and are all on the list, which I think demonstrates our global commitment to this sport,” he stated.
He added that fans can expect an announcement in “the next couple of months” regarding an event in Europe. While a desire to expand into continental Europe has long been expressed by the UFC, Finland has never before been mooted as a possible staging ground.
Zelaznik also went on to say that Finland is quickly becoming the front-runner for the UFC’s inaugural quest into the center of Europe. While the promotion doesn’t currently have any fighters of Finnish descent on the current roster, they do have quite a few from neighboring countries that could come in handy.
