The Ultimate Fighting Championship has confirmed a previously rumored light heavyweight clash between part-time training partners Keith Jardine and Brandon Vera, which will take place on October 18th at UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben. The event will emanate from the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England.
The UFC officially announced the fight in a press release sent out to the media yesterday. The bout will serve as the show’s co-main event.
After surprising many with his shocking win over former champion Chuck Liddell last fall, Jardine looked to move into title contender status only to be brutally knocked out by longtime PRIDE title holder Wanderlei Silva at UFC 84 in May. Jardine has now lost (and has been knocked out in) two out of his last three bouts.
Meanwhile Vera has been a bit of a scapegoat this week for his lackluster performance against IFL convert Reese Andy at the UFC’s “Silva vs. Irvin” event a couple weeks ago. It’s key to note that the fight was Vera’s first in his career at 205 lbs and that a bad weight cut (he said it was his first cut in close to nine years) likely contributed the absence of his usual explosiveness.
