Though featured in his first UFC Main event, Thiago Alves failed to make weight, tipping the scales at 174lbs. His opponent, Matt Hughes, agreed to fight at a catchweight of 174lbs. No word yet on whether or not Alves will be reprimanded for missing weight. the common practice is to award a small percentage of your fight purse to your opponent, but being that this event is taking place in England where there is no sanctioning body in place, it is unkknown whether that will happen.

“Alves pulled a Gina Carano” who pulled a Travis Lutter!
I won’t lie that the idea that he wasn’t as worried about making weight because of the lack of commission crossed my mind. That’s why I included the “no commission” part in the post. And you know the UFC would not allow this fight to take place. For an event that has already had the main event changed multiple times, I’m sure White and company were going to make it lucrative for Hughes (or Alves) if the other failed to make weight. With no title on the line, it was easy to make sure this fight took place barring another injury. Hopefully someone will ask at the post fight press conference as to any repurcussions for Alves not cutting it.

apparently hughes gets 10% of alves purse for accepting the fight.

Alves pulled a Gina Carano.
I wonder if he didn’t care as much because there is no sanctioning body in England.
