It was an evening of memorable quotes as the seventh season of the reality show that changed mixed martial arts forever, “The Ultimate Fighter” premiered last night.
Unlike previous seasons where the first episode would involve an introduction of the fighters and a visual of them settling into their new house and training schedule, Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White decided to throw a wrench into things.
Inviting a total of thirty-two fighters for the first time in history, White informed them that the only way they would be part of the show is if they fought their way in, delivering the message by way of the single quote that has been featured on television ads for the past few weeks.
“What I get tired of every season, and it drives me fucking crazy, are the pussies and poseurs who come on the show, every season it makes me sick,” White said to start off the episode. “This season, you’re going to fight your way onto the show.”
With only two days to prepare for the biggest fights of their lives, UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, who will be serving as one of the head coaches alongside summer opponent Forrest Griffin, summed their feelings up best.
“I think some of them crapped their pants. I smelt it,” Jackson stated.
16 fighters were chosen to compete. The next set will fight next week. All of the fighters successfully made weight. Even John Clarke, who was forced to cut a total of 17 lbs in 48 hours.
With Jackson, Griffin, and White ringside taking notes, the fights started off with a bang, literally, as Mike Dolce quickly knocked out Prince McLean in the first round of their fight.
Cale Yarbrough, the show’s youngest competitor, used Clarke’s brutal weight cut as an opportunity to fatigue his opponent with wrestling, eventually stopping Clarke with strikes. Also victorious was Amir Sadollah, who submitted Steve Byrnes with an armbar.
Impressing Griffin and company was undefeated HDNet Fights veteran C.B. Dollaway, who quickly put away David Baggett.
