Tap Selections: UFC 91

Here are our predictions (after the jump, winners in bold) for tonight’s UFC 91 event.

The main card will be broadcast on pay-per-view and Yahoo! Sports starting at 10 PM ET.

Bill Reger

Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar
Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Josh Hendricks
Nate Quarry vs. Demian Maia
Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory

Jorge Gurgel vs. Aaron Riley
Jeremy Stephens vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Alvin Robinson vs. Mark Bocek
Matt Brown vs. Ryan Thomas

I hate to say it, but Brock takes this. Randy's chin is not what it used to be, courtesy of Chuck. He rocked Sylvia so early, Tim never got chance to unleash anything. Gonzaga has never been an accomplished striker. At some point, Randy is going to get tagged and hurt, even if its on the ground. Those punches from the side to Herring's head were wicked.

I've always admired the heck out of Randy and really rooted for him. That being said, I've never been overwhelmed by his sheer skill. He's very good, but never great.  And Brock's strengths - power, speed, and wrestling background - could really negate Randy's strengths.  I never really thought he'd have a chance against Fedor or Nog. Let's face it, Randy's a blown up light heavyweight.  He's been overwhelmed before by big guys with solid wrestling foundations in Ricco Rodriguez and Josh Barnett.  I can see Brock doing the same thing.

I'm far from being on the Lesnar bandwagon.  In fact, I don't like him as far back as the NCAA finals against Stephen Neal when he stalled out trying to steal a victory.  I was there for that one in Cleveland.  He's a dog at times.   But he's just a bad matchup for Couture IMO.

Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar
Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Josh Hendricks
Nate Quarry vs. Demian Maia
Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory

Jorge Gurgel vs. Aaron Riley
Jeremy Stephens vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Alvin Robinson vs. Mark Bocek
Matt Brown vs. Ryan Thomas

Obviously a big advantage here for Randy is experience.  What situations will Randy put Brock in that he's never seen before?  Lesnar's size and athleticism can bring him success, but I don't see him being able to sustain it all five rounds and adjust to whatever game plan Randy puts forward.  He'll have to show some versatility and work much harder against Randy than he did Herring, which was a tailor-made match-up for him.  I agree that this isn't a great match-up for Couture but Lesnar isn't ready for this.  Randy's too smart.

I think we'll see Lesnar win the first round or two but as the fight goes on, he'll become tired and unable to take Couture down.  Randy weathers the early storm and ground and pounds a gassed Lesnar in the 4th round.

Gabriel Gonzaga
vs. Josh Hendricks
Nate Quarry vs. Demian Maia
Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory

I told myself I would never bet against Couture ever again, I have to stay true to that.

David Singer

Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar
Kenny Florian vs. Joe Stevenson
Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Josh Hendricks
Nate Quarry vs. Demian Maia
Dustin Hazelett vs. Tamdan McCrory

Jorge Gurgel vs. Aaron Riley
Jeremy Stephens vs. Rafael dos Anjos
Alvin Robinson vs. Mark Bocek
Matt Brown vs. Ryan Thomas

Randy Couture's in great shape for his age, but his age is still a factor. Add in the ring rust from the long layoff since his last fight, and all it takes is one pop from Brock Lesnar for the upset. Couture should be patient enough, and smart enough to take this one, but I'm keeping away from the sportsbooks tonight.
