Yesterday, Strikeforce officials announced that they had released PRIDE veteran Phil “The New York Bad Ass” Baroni from his contract. Baroni appeared under the Strikeforce banner twice dropping exciting bouts to Frank Shamrock and Joe Riggs.
“We wish Phil the best of luck and hope he can revive his career,” said Strikeforce Founder and CEO Scott Coker. “If he can, maybe one day, he can return and fight for us.”
According to reports, Baroni is now on the verge of signing a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Over the past year, Baroni has been very vocal on his stance and desire to return to the UFC octagon.
Baroni, a native of Long Island, possesses a mixed martial arts record of 13-11. Since dropping to welterweight in July ‘08, Baroni has gone 3-1 securing victories over Scott Jansen, Ron Verdadero, and Olaf Alfonso.
