Former PRIDE light heavyweight champion Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva will make his first appearance at middleweight in February when he takes on top contender and K-1 veteran Yoshihiro “Sexyama” Akiyama.
The report comes of USA Today who states the bout is rumoured for UFC 111 on February 21 when the UFC makes its first appearance in Sydney, Australia.
Silva, a native of Curitiba, Brazil, possesses a decorated mixed martial arts record of 32-10-1. Silva holds victories over the likes of Keith Jardine, Ricardo, Arona, Kazuhiro Nakamura, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Kazushi Sakuraba, and Dan Henderson.
Since joining the UFC ranks, Silva has gone 1-3 dropping bouts to Chuck Liddell, Rich Franklin and Jackson.
Akiyama, a native of Osaka, Japan, possesses a mixed martial arts record of 13-1 with 2 no contests. Akiyama is a superstar in his native land of Japan and holds victories over the likes of Alan Belcher, Denis Kang, Melvin Manhoef, and Kestutis Smirnovas. Akiyama’s sole professional loss came to K-1 veteran Jerome LeBanner in 2005.
