Popular Japanese fight scene veteran Bob Sapp has been tapped to replace an injured Gegard Mousasi against Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in the semifinals of DREAM’s first-ever “Super Hulk” tournament, which continues at DREAM.11 on October 6.
Sapp confirmed his participation at the event with MMA Weekly on Wednesday. He re-enters the tourney after falling in the opening round to Ikuhisa Minowa back in May. “The Beast” last competed on June 27, suffering yet another defeat to former WWE star and undefeated heavyweight prospect Bobby Lashley. It marks the first time Sapp has suffered consecutive losses in his career.
Details regarding Mousasi’s injury have not yet been revealed, but rumors are circulating that the Strikeforce light heavyweight champ may have injured his shoulder during an exhibition match against Fedor Emelianenko at last weekend’s M-1 Breakthrough event.
Sokoudjou snapped a two-fight losing streak of his own in picking up a first-round stoppage of heavyweight kickboxer Jan Nortje in the tourney’s opening round. The former PRIDE Fighting Championships standout had not picked up a victory since Kazuhiro Nakamura injured his leg in their UFC 84 light heavyweight bout over a year ago.
The other “Super Hulk” semifinal bout will pit Minowa up against Hong Man Choi. Despite traditional DREAM grand prix standards usually having the two semifinal winners competing the tournament at the same event, the finals are expected to take place at K-1’s annual “Dynamite” show on New Year’s Eve.
