Rock the Vote: Should Sherk Be Stripped of the Title?

Yesterday it was announced that current UFC lightweight champion Sean “Muscle Shark” Sherk tested positive for nandrolone, an anabolic agent, following his successful title defense at UFC 73: Stacked. Our question to you is, “Should Sean Sherk be stripped of the title?”

In the past we saw heavyweight champions Tim Sylvia and Josh Barnett test positive for anabolic agents and both fighters were stripped of their titles and suspended. Should Sherk get the same treatment?

Strip him of the title! What a stupid move on Sherk’s part. The UFC has been working hard to solidify the lightweight division and this idiot turns around and tests positive along with his challenger Hermes Franca. I don’t understand how these guys can take these substances when they know they’ll be tested.

Sherk will definitely be stripped of the title. They took it away from Tim Sylvia and not because he wears a kilt.

If they take Sylvia’s belt away for failing a drug test, then they certainly will take Sherk’s away.

I think we would need to wait until after any appeal process.

Sherk tested positive with a reading of 12mg… to put it into perspective, 6mg is considered possible naturally occuring and when Royce Gracie tested positive his tests were over 50mgs.

It is “possible” this reading could have been alot higher due to factors other than steriods (supplements, diet, training).

Franca has admitted to his roid use and will wear his punishment. If Sherk is proven guilty, I hope he is stripped of his title, hung, drawn and quartered.

Anyone found guilty beyond reasonable doubt is tarnishing the sports image and should be punished to the fullest extent.

Lets wait a bit before we light our torches…

Yeah there’s no reason to put the lightweight division on hold for an entire year. Have Penn face the winner of Thomas-Fisher later this year.

Tae Phillips - You raise a very good point…

“It is “possible” this reading could have been alot higher due to factors other than steriods (supplements, diet, training).”

When I heard Sherk tested positive that was the first thing I said to myself.

Hopefully Penn still commits to the lightweight division is Sherk is in fact stripped of the title…

I think it’s too early to tell whether he should be stripped of the title or not.

If this does turn out to be true, and not somehow a false positive, then he should definitely be stripped of the belt, and be punished to the fullest extent.

I think a playoff would be good.
No offense Tae, he was double the max limit. That tells me that he was on it throughout the training process and then pulled off it in a suggested ammount of time, but couldnt get it out of his system due to dehydration of making weight.

I was a big Sherk fan, now Im mad I even cheered for the guy.

Hell yeah strip him of his title.  If they made it so you lose your contract for testing positive I’d bet they’d have a lot less problems…I hate the fact that doping has tainted MMA…

Great point Lupuri, that reaks of a bad calculation if anything, meaning his cycled off too late.

Check out this thread:

Some very interesting information there, maybe Sherk didn’t take anything…

It’s hard to say, but maybe he didnt take anything..

Why would he train like hell everyday, and eat all that shitty food if he really took steroids?

I think this is a no-brainer, the UFC won’t mess around, it’s not a case of should he be stripped, more like when will he be stripped. It’s a shame.
