Newly crowned World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight champion Jamie Varner will make his first title defense against undefeated top contender Marcus Hicks when the organization holds their next following this weekend on August 3rd.
The news comes from MMA Weekly, who have confirmed the matchup with sources close to the fight itself.
Varner scored a surprise upset over then-champion Rob McCullough at a WEC event in February, viciously stopping the Team Punishment member with strikes in the third round of their title bout. It was Varner’s third win in a row and his latest fight that hasn’t gone to a decision. Varner hasn’t gone the distance since losing a decision to Jesse Moreng in his second career fight.
Hicks remains undefeated thus far in his professional mixed martial arts career and has finished off all of his opponents by either TKO or submission. All of his wins inside the confines of the WEC have come by way of his patented guillotine choke, the most recent victim being Total Combat veteran Ed Ratcliff, whom Hicks submitted in March.
The event will emanate from The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. WEC light heavyweight champion Brian Stann is expected to make his first title defense against Steve Cantwell at the show. Reigning WEC welterweight title holder Carlos Condit is also advertised as being in action on the card.
