Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has signed a contract with the UFC and may participate in UFC 72.

For those of you unaware, Shogun has spent the majority of his career in Japan fighting for PRIDE and he is widely considered the top light heavyweight in the world aside from UFC champion Chuck Liddell.

Shogun (16-2) holds stunning victories over the likes of Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Alistair Overeem, Kevin Randleman, and Ricardo Arona. The Curitiba, Brazil native is considered the future of the LHW division as he possesses a devastating arsenal of strikes and submissions.

Shogun’s only losses have been to UFC veteran Renato “Babalu” Sobral at IFC: Global Domination in 2003 when he lost by guillotine and Mark Coleman at PRIDE 31 when he suffered a serious elbow injured which halted the bout.

Since returning from his injury Shogun has been on a tear racking up four straight victories with stoppages over Cyrille Diabate, Kevin Randleman and Alistair Overeem.
