UFC light heavyweight contender Thiago Silva will now reportedly take on Europe Top Team product Antonio Mendes at UFC 84: Ill Will on May 24th.
The news comes from a report by Sherdog‘s Greg Savage.
The event will be headlined by a bad blood-filled UFC lightweight title bout that pits current champion B.J. Penn up against former champion Sean Sherk.
Silva was originally scheduled to face the heavyweight winner of the second season of “The Ultimate Fighter in Rashad Evans but Evans was tapped to fill in as an injury replacement against Chuck Liddell at UFC 85 in June.
He has won his first three fights inside the Octagon and remains undefeated in his professional career. Silva’s last fight was a stoppage victory over Houston Alexander two months ago. Reports have been circulating that Silva has chosen to train with American Top Team for this fight instead of his usual Chute Boxe home.
Mendes, who will be making his debut inside the Ultimate Fighting Championship, is currently riding an eleven-fight winning streak that stretches all the way back to October 2004. The Fortaleza, Brazil native last defeated Kiril Sidelnikov by doctor’s stoppage at an M-1 event last summer.
