Report: Ken Shamrock to Fight Kimbo Slice at Oct 4 EliteXC

Loretta Hunt of Sherdog is reporting that UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock and famed street brawler Kimbo Slice have agreed to a contract to throwdown at the next EliteXC show on CBS, October 4, 2008 at the Bank Atlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida..  This show will be the third of four contracted shows for EliteXC on CBS, but given the ratings from the second show in July, it is believed that EliteXC is really needing to put up big numbers to continue the contract.

Despite Kimbo getting called out after his last fight by undefeated heavyweight Brett Rogers, EliteXC has decided to go the safer route with the matchup against MMA legend Ken Shamrock.  The 45 year old Shamrock will enter the fight riding a five fight losing streak.  But his name recognition and selling power can not be underestimated.

A relative newcomer to organized Mixed Martial Arts, Kimbo, aka Kevin Ferguson, will take a 3-0 record into the fight against the Lion’s Den founder.  Kimbo’s last fight against James Thompson at the first EliteXC on CBS show ended up shrouded in controversy and resulting in a 3rd round TKO for Kimbo.  Many felt that the fight should have been stopped in the third round with Thompson dominating Slice on the ground.  Then, many felt the fight was stopped prematurely when Kimbo rocked Thompson to start the third round.

An official announcement from EliteXC is expected later today.

Update ( 3:45pm EST) - Jared Shaw of EliteXC has confirmed to 5 Oz of Pain that Ken Shamrock will indeed be the opponent for Kimbo Slice on October 4.

Haha, can’t say I’m surprised though.  They’ll be able to sell this fight more than Rogers and it should be an easy W for Kimbo.

lol, i doubt it’s an easy win for kimbo.  Kimbo has proven zero and if he wins this it still doesn’t prove much.  But at least ken isn’t a stiff and has chance at a submission, unlike kimbo’s last fights.

I knew this would happen.  Elite XC is a joke.  It is obvious who will win this, unless Ken gets a lucky shot in.  What a pitiful organization.  They are truly hurting MMA with their terrible shows and mediocre fighters.

Shamrock is dumb enough to stand with Kimbo. Unless Shamrock somehow catches him in a leg lock or kneebar while getting pounded on, Slice stays undefeated.

I’m not sure EliteXC can afford to give Kimbo a real opponent.  They’re giving the best guy available that they can promote, and it’ll probably do well.  The last CBS broadcast showed that no one cares about the promotion outside of Kimbo/Gina.  They’re leaking money and have probably made the best financial decision.

John, Bas will die at ringside if Kimbo gets tapped out.  He’s teaching him sub defense for sure

John - That’s my worry as well.  Ken’s silly pride will get the best of him and he’ll look to stand and trade ala Don Frye.  Problem is, he has a glass chin compared to Frye.  If Shamrock makes a dedicated effort to take this to the ground and succeeds, he has a legit shot of winning.  Size wise, they are going to be very similar.  And compared to James Thompson, Shamrock is a wiz on the ground.

That said, Ken’s reflexes are a shadow of what they once were.  He never been well known for his takedowns either.  Most likely, Kimbo catches him at some point, and Ken throws everything out the window and starts wailing.  That will open himself up to the KO punch.

The problem is that the casual fan thinks this is a great matchup and that Shamrock is a formidable opponent, if Kimbo wins then Kimbo is the real deal in their minds - However, anyone that has followed MMA over the past couple of years knows that Shamrock is merely a pawn in this chess game of trying to hype up Kimbo as much as possible.

Of course Elite XC cannot risk matching Kimbo up against Rogers just yet but as a fan of the sport I now realize that Elite XC is a circus, this isn’t boxing where a fighter can have 30 fights against cans and be undefeated in order to hype him up…

The problem with Shamrock is that he has been tossed in against a rising star before, Rich Franklin, and I swear to this day that fight was rigged - Whether it be a legit slip or not, Shamrock looked to fall, slip, drop, whatever you want to call it WAY too easily and I have a bad feeling he is going to go out there and let himself be sacrificed instead of actually trying to beat him…

For the love of God, Shamrock, you used to be my favorite fighter. PLEASE TRAIN SERIOUSLY! Your attitude of showing up for paychecks and riding on your past accomplishments is officially over - you’ve been officially told you’re no good with this fight. Take it fucking seriously.

*sigh*… probably like telling a suicide bomber to convert to Mormonism though… :(

Elite xc has put on some quality shows. Without Fedor, Banned was no better. As for Shamrock vs. Kimbo I’m laughing already. Hopefully the undercard will have some good scraps.

Kimbo 1st round KO
