Longtime heavyweight king Fedor Emelianenko’s Strikeforce debut could come sooner than expected. An advertised bout against heavy-handed striker Brett Rogers could be targeted for a yet-to-be-announced October 10 event in Newark, New Jersey.
Showtime Sports executive Chris DeBlasio confirmed the addition of the date to the network’s programming schedule with MMA Junkie but stopped short of confirming that the organization would definitely be holding an event that night.
“There’s no information on that particular date or an event planned,” DeBlasio told MMA Junkie. “It’s just a placeholder for scheduling so they can block off time where we can air a live event on that date if we choose to. It could always be changed, even of we name Fighter A vs. Fighter B, but in this particular instance, it definitely could be.”
Strikeforce Director of Communications Mike Afromowitz also told the website that the projected date was nothing but a “rumor” but also apparently stated that he expects an announcement regarding Fedor and Brett Rogers “sometime this week”.
MMA reporter Franklin McNeil first reported the possibility of the date and location on this past week’s episode of ESPN’s “MMA Live”.
“I haven’t gotten this confirmed by Scott Coker at the moment, but I’m hearing that the Prudential Center in Newark on October 10 could be the site of Fedor Emelianenko vs. Brett Rogers,” McNeil said on the program. “Again, I want to emphasize that this has not been confirmed. However, it’s looking good. The source that told me this was a very reliable person.”
