Former UFC welterweight champion Carlos Newton was victorious in his first professional bout in a year and a half, scoring a first-round stoppage of fellow Canadian Nabil Khatib in the main event of Saturday’s “Warrior-1: Inception” event in Gatineau, Quebec.
After looking impressive on his feet, Newton took Khatib down to the canvas, where he pinned right arm across his face and pounded away until Khatib was no longer able to defend himself. The win was the first for Newton since he stopped Tokimitsu Ishizawa with strikes at a K-1 Hero’s event in October 2006.
TKO Championship Fighting product Martin Grandmont also found the win column, earning a quick knockout of Renzo Gracie-trained Mark Holst. Former professional wrestler, hockey and football player Glenn Kulka fell to MMA newcomer Hosier Bruno on the main card as well.
