MMA on Tap Top 10 - July 11, 2007

Here are the latest MMA on Tap Top 10 fighter rankings. We will be updating these pretty much whenever an adjustment is needed, like after a major event, for example.

The rankings break down into six different lists of 10. Five of them are by division and the last is our pound-for-pound rankings. If you ever want to compare these with your own or just take a look at the latest update, you can find them under the Top 10 category in our features section.

The rankings were tabulated by Scott and myself. Feel free to chime in with your own lists or any adjustments that can be recommended.

Why Have you taken BJ Penn off the Welterweight list? If Dan Henderson can be on both, why not BJ?
Also Matt Hughes has lost only twice in over 6 years, won 19 and defended his title 7 times in total. Less than a year ago he was rated the best pound for pound fighter in MMA history, now he’s not even on your pound for pound list and 3rd on your welterweight list?

Dan Henderson is still on the middleweight list because he still holds a title. BJ was moved to lightweight because that’s the division he’s now focused on. He’s scheduled to fight Sherk for the title in November. If he wins, it’s not like he can just abandon the lightweight division.

Hughes was rated the best pound for pound fighter in history less than a year ago? That’s news to me Tae. Hughes has never been on our pound for pound list for a reason and St. Pierre exploited that in their fight. Hughes has been third at welterweight on our eyes for a while now too.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Right now we have St. Pierre and Serra rated higher than Hughes. Plain and simple.

The only thing that jumps out at me is Gonzaga at #9.  He’s been there since your April ratings and hasn’t budged.  I think he’s a very solid #5.  I think he’s #4 actually, but we’ll see if he beats Couture first.

I like the list as a whole. Most I agree with, such as Gonzaga at #9, but I dont think Couture should be so high, even with the title. IMO Gonzaga wins this fight but still shouldnt be top 5 until he wins again against someone thats more a top 5.

Barnett before Cro Crop even with 2 losses against him is odd. Not to mention Cro Cop is ahead of him in the pfp list but not the HW list.

Sera shouldnt be #2.

Gomi is better than #3 also.

Just my opinion. All in all good list and much more realistic than cracked out MMA Weekly’s.

How long do you plan to keep Fedor at #1?  I personally feel that if he doesn’t start competing against some of the other guys on that list, he should start moving down it.  He can’t go undefeated for as long as he did and then expect to stay at the top while others are fighting and he is sitting at home.  I mean c’mon, the last guy he fought was a natural middle weight.

Couture proved your rankings to be accurate.  I thought he was too high before, but he proved me wrong.  He definitely deserves at least #4.  Even #2 wouldn’t be undeserving, considering Nog looked horrible against Herring and Barnett is twiddling his thumbs.

I agree with the previous post on Fedor.  As great as he is, his inactivity hurts his ranking.  He can’t stay number 1 without fighting any of top heavyweights.  And if he goes anywhere but the UFC, he can never be considered number 1 because none of the top heavyweights (outside of Barnett) are anywhere but w/ Zuffa.

couture#2 heavyweight until he beats fedor. then, #1.  i agree that fedor should either start competing with guys on that list or move down.  couture cited a major motivation for him was the rejuvinated heavyweight division.  his fights are numbered.  he only wants to compete against quality opponents.
