A rubber match between Strikeforce lightweight title holder Gilbert Melendez and his chief rival, former champ Josh Thomson has been booked as the co-main event of Strikeforce's next event on May 19.
The promotion officially announced the event and bout today. The show will take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California and willbe headlined by the finals of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix tournament featuring Josh Barnett against Daniel Cormier.
In addition, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker also announced today that a rematch between former light heavyweight champion Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante and Mike Kyle will take place as well as a meeting between Bobby Voelker and welterweight prospect Nah-Shon Burrell.
Melendez and Thomson have met twice prior. Melendez lost his Strikeforce lightweight belt and was handed his second professional loss at the hands of Thomson back in June 2008, but exacted revenge in a rematch, besting Thomson in a December 2009 bout to regain his title.
Cavalcante and Kyle originally clashed in June 2009, with Kyle stopping the Brazilian via strikes in the second round. Cavalcante went on to win three straight and the Strikeforce light heavyweight belt before falling to Dan Henderson last spring. Kyle has won six of nine since.
Voelker is currently riding a three-fight win streak, most recently recording consecutive victories over rival Roger Bowling. Burrell has won all but one of his pro bout to date, including three straight under the Strikeforce banner.
