Longtime pound-for-pound boxing king Floyd Mayweather Jr. has reportedly bested reigning UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre for ESPN’s “Best Fighter” ESPY award. The awards were handed out earlier this week at a cerermony Wednesday night in Los Angeles.
The news comes from a report from The Fight Network. St. Pierre became the third mixed martial artist to be nominated for the award. Former UFC champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Randy Couture were both in the running for last year’s award but also fell short of Mayweather.
Mayweather bested fellow boxers Kelly Pavlik, Joe Calzaghe and female fighter Holly Holm as well as St. Pierre to win the award for the second year in a row. The ESPY awards are scheduled to air this Sunday at 9:00 PM ET on ESPN.
