The UFC has announced that Matt Serra suffered a back injury while training which has forced him to withdraw from his Dec. 29 title bout with former champ Matt Hughes.
“This is devastating news because they were so looking forward to fighting each other, said White.
“Unfortunately injuries happen and I look forward to Serra recovering quickly, and to getting him back into the Octagon.”
Serra had just finished a Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling training session and was demonstrating a move when he became gripped with pain and fell to the floor. Serra went to the hospital and underwent an MRI, which revealed the herniated discs in his lower back.
“This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Serra. “I’ve never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off of the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and I’m devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday – All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible.”

HMMMMMMMMMMMMM…PLEASE ELABORATE

Serra should be stripped of the title. He has not had to fight once to defend it and now he gets a back injury? BS. Now when will this happen, March? Good grief…

You can’t really blame Serra for not defending the title. The UFC set this all into motion when he won it. They never gave him the opportunity to defend it, which was sort of poor planning IMO. Injuries happen though. I’d rather see them fight healthy than 1 guy be injured and we are left wondering what would have/could have happened if they waited.

Yeah, it sucks. but Serra isn’t exactly smiling either.
One good thing, same thing happened with GSP and Hughes. GSP was hurt couldn’t fight for the belt, so that set up a classic rematch against B.J.
B.J. had it won, until his cardio came into play again. Still was a hell of a match that wouldn’t have happened unless something unexpected happened.
Hopefully Hughes will fight someone else at the card, but knowing Dana it won’t happen.

Hughes should have to fight someone, rematch with GSP?

Hahaha. THAT’S what I was gonna say b4, but highly doubtful. It’s a fans dream come true, but White would prob be afraid Hughes will lose again, then it would be Serra and GSP, even though GSP would DESTROY Serra this time, I don’t see White doing that.
I’m just glad their finally having my two faves, Iceman and Wand FINALLY fighting. What sucks, if Iceman loses tihs one, it’s 3 in a row, but the caliber of peeps he’s losing to, you can’t take anything away from Liddell.
Who’s got who to win. I say Wand, but then again with all the bad performances from the Pride fighters in the octagon lately, I dunno. I think the combo between the different rules and the different weapon octagon as opposed to the ring.
Well, should be good anyway.
HUGHES AND GSP III!!!

I’m so disappointed. Matt Hughes is my favorite fighter, UFC 79 is on my friend and I’s birthday, and we are taking a road trip to go see the show. Terrible.
Let me say this though, Dana’s meeting with Randy just got a WHOLE lot more interesting….
