Rising UFC light heavyweight contender Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida will attempt to even closer to a title shot when he takes on fellow unbeaten Thiago Silva on October 18th at UFC 89: Bisping vs. Leben, which will take place at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, England.
The organization officially announced the bout earlier today.
Machida has won his first five fights inside the confines of the UFC. His last three wins have come over perennial top-ten fighters in his division. After dispatching of Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Kazuhiro Nakamura in consecutive fights, Machida went on to pick up the biggest victory of his career thus far, a dominating unanimous decision over former six-time UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz.
Meanwhile Silva, a product of Chute Boxe who now trains with Florida-based American Top Team, has picked up victories in his first four UFC bouts, all in impressive fashion. Silva busted into the light heavyweight contenders picture after a brutal stoppage of upstart Houston Alexander in November of last year. He last submitted newcomer Antonio Mendes by way of strikes in May.
UFC 89 will be headlined by a middleweight clash between England native Michael Bisping and hard-hitting popular veteran Chris Leben. Additional main card bouts are expected to include Diego Sanchez vs. Thiago Alves, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs. Luis Cane, and Dan Hardy vs. Akihiro Gono.

I wouldn’t have minded at all with Machida getting a title shot but I think it’s a bit early for Silva. I’m assuming that the UFC was most likely thinking about a potential Rampage-Forrest rematch or Liddell-Evans winner getting the next shot at the belt while putting together this one. Maybe Dana White and company aren’t putting as much stock in Machida’s win over Tito as we think.

You know i completely forgot about liddell’s fight with evans coming up. So your probably right on the winner getting a title shot.

Regardless its going to be an interesting fight. Machida has shown he has good striking(not any knockout power by any means but good standup) and Silva is a stud on the ground he showed that his last fight when he got in trouble standing up. Going to have a hard time choosing a winner for this one.

Not happy about this fight. I would of wanted either of them fighting for the title next but i guess not.
