Ken Shamrock, Leg Breaker

“Honestly, I think I can test him anywhere. He’s got big, heavy hands. Everyone says he punches hard and he probably does. But again, he doesn’t punch properly, in my opinion. He swings his hands, he moves his body back and forth trying to get as much power as he can, but there’s really no snap behind it. You can usually see the punches coming. I’m going to do what I need to do. If it goes to the ground, I’ll probably break his leg. I mean, no question. I will break his leg. If he gives it to me, I’m going to break it.”

- UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock gives his thoughts on the potential outcome of his anticipated bout against heavyweight sensation Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson on October 4 on CBS to Sherdog.com.

Shamrock is correct. If the fight does indeed go to the ground, he has a massive advantage. His submission skills are legendary and he could easily break Slice’s leg if he wanted to. However Shamrock’s last handful of bouts put his comments in question. Will Ken push his pride aside and not stand with Kimbo?

That last question is right on the money. Shamrock was never a scary striker. He could get the job done against some opponents, but his strength has always been his submissions. This is even more true as an aging fighter, where his reflexes are slowing, his strength begins to decline, and in general he becomes a slower fighter. His ground skill though is going to fade much slower, and that’s what can win him this fight.
I’ve said it before on here. Ken Shamrock was once my favorite fighter. If he does indeed push aside his pride instead of trying to out strike Slice, I have no doubt he’ll win. That’s what is so frustrating about Shamrock, he’s still got a lot of skill, he just refuses to stick to it.

An afterthought I just had, if Shamrock wins, we get to hear the uneducated folks say “Oh, well he lost to Shamrock because Shamrock is so good!”, thinking he’s still the guy he was 10 years ago. So Kimbo will still be the talk of the masses even if he loses as the ultimate badass. We’ll be hearing “Give him a couple years and he’ll crush Shamrock!”
Even though Ken Shamrock is barely relevant anymore..,
