Last night Shooto veteran Javier “Showtime” Vazquez shocked fans on hand to witness ShoXC: “Elite Challenger Series” when he announced his retirement following his quick submission victory over JC Pennington. Vazquez stated that he felt like MMA had become a job and that he’d be better suited continuing his MMA career as a coach.
“I’ve had my ups and downs in this sport,” said Vazquez, of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., who is building a new gym in his hometown. “I have a family now, I have a wife … and I’m better suited right now as a coach than I am as a fighter.”
“It’s just that time. I think when this sport feels like it’s your job, like you’re clocking in, it’s time to go,” declared Vazquez as he wiped tears from his face.
Vazquez spent nearly four years watching the sport evolve from the sidelines before making his return to MMA earlier this year at EliteXC: Destiny. Vazquez was successful in his return bout defeating Adriano Pereira. Vazquez leaves the sport with a professional MMA record of 12-2-0.
