2008 Olympic judo gold medalist Satoshi Ishii will make his long-awaited MMA debut at Sengoku’s second-annual year-end show, against fellow champion judoka Hidehiko Yoshida, World Victory Road officials announced today.
A date and venue for the event have not yet been announced, however the details are expected to be revealed within the next month or so. Other fighters possible for the proposed fight card include Sengoku lightweight champion Mizuto Hirota and Sengoku featherweight champion Masanori Kanehara.
Prior to signing with WVR, Ishii (0-0) was heavily courted by the UFC and DREAM, even going as far as signing a preliminary contract with the Japanese promotion earlier this year. Ishii has trained with a number of US-based camps over the past year in preparation for his professional debut, including American Top Team and Xtreme Couture.
Yoshida (8-7-1), a former star with PRIDE Fighting Championships, has dropped four out of his last five bouts. The 40 year old last competed at Sengoku’s “No Ran 2009” show in January, losing a split decision to Sanae Kikuta.
