Haye Showing Interest in MMA

English boxer David Haye, who currently holds three of the four major cruiserweight titles, has expressed his interest in entering the world of mixed martial arts after he turns 30-years-old.

Haye recently made the remarks to the Southwark News.

“You know, I’ve been boxing since the age of 10 years old, 20 years in the game is enough for me,” Haye said in the article. “But what I’d like to do then, I’d like to challenge whoever’s regarded as the number one mixed martial arts fighter.”

Haye also went on to say that he had trained in some martial arts - karate, judo, and jiu-jitsu, not a bad base if I do say so myself. Obviously Haye likely hasn’t trained enough to make any kind of immediate impact in the sport just yet but he’s better off than a Ray Mercer type that wants to give MMA a shot.

What intrigues me the most about the potential of Haye entering the fray though is his striking, and not because he’s a boxer. Anyone that’s seen Haye fight more than once has noticed that he isn’t the most technical of strikers.

His punches are sometimes unorthodox and lacking a defensive response for what his opponent is about to throw, but in MMA, his style would be extremely effective in my opinion. Couple that with the fact that the man has some definite power and a few good years of training with a solid team could certainly make things interesting.

If anyone else has seen his fights, if he steps into the MMA arena he will easily be the best striker in the sport…A pro boxer is dangerous in MMA, add a bit of takedown defense and submission defense and a boxer like Haye could do some serious damage

Pro boxers aren’t always good, just look at Alessio Sakara! It takes a certain style of unorthodox boxing to be effective in MMA and the writer of this blog is right to point out that Haye’s unorthodox style is what may seperate him out as being capapble of making a good transition to MMA.

IMO he would be good, and judging by his current weight he should be able to make Light Heavyweight fairly easily. A good weight for a man of his size and power.
