It seems that Akihiro Gono is going to be out of action a lot longer than everyone expected.

According to a report by Sherdog’s Jordan Breen, the wacky PRIDE veteran may now be sidelined until the fall because of a broken hand. The injury forced him to pull out of a scheduled bout against Jon Fitch at next month’s UFC 82: Pride of a Champion.

After his win over Tamdan McCrory at UFC 78, the Nevada State Athletic Commission medically suspended Gono for an undisclosed wrist injury. Gono was serving the suspension and began training again until a visit to the doctor’s revealed that the constant pain in his right hand was because it was actually broken.

Due to Gono worsening the injury through training, he will now require surgery on his hand, which he will reportedly undergo tomorrow.

This is the third instance in Gono’s career in which he has suffered a broken hand.
