Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports is reporting that Paulo Filho will defend his WEC middleweight title on Dec. 12 against UFC veteran Chael Sonnen.
“Chael matches well with Paulo Filho, who is a tough guy for us to get opponents for,” Adams said. “He was a Division I wrestler and he finished high in the Olympic Trials and I think he matches very, very well with Paulo. He’s got a lot of wins against a lot of top guys, but this is really his kind of breakthrough chance, which I believe he realizes.”
Paulo Filho (15-0) is a veteran of PRIDE who holds victories over Kazuo Misaki, Ryo Chonan, Amar Suloev, and Murilo Rua. Filho captured the WEC middleweight title in August when he TKO’d UFC veteran Joe Doerksen at WEC 29.
Chael Sonnen (19-8-1) is a member of Team Quest who is currently on a five-fight winning streak with victories over Kyacey Uscola, Amar Suloev, Tim McKenzie, Alexey Oleinik, and Timothy Credeur.
