Fighting and Entertainment Group today announced the semifinal matchups for the inaugural DREAM featherweight grand prix, which will continue at DREAM.11 on October 6 at the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan.
Following his shocking victories over Chase Beebe and Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, upstart wrestler Joe Warren will take on skilled grappler Bibiano Fernandes while WEC veteran Hiroyuki Takaya will face K-1 mainstay Hideo Tokoro.
Warren, winner of the 2006 Pan American and World wrestling championships, shocked many when he dispatched of Beebe, a former WEC bantamweight champion, in his first professional fight during the tournament’s opening round, but topped that when he edged Yamamoto by split decision in May, handing the popular Japanese star his first loss in seven years.
His opponent, Fernandes has earned consecutive unanimous decision victories over Takafumi Otsuka and Masakazu Imanari thus far in the tourney.
After a disappointing stint with the WEC, Takaya has found success in DREAM. He’s knocked off Jong Won Kim and Yoshiro Maeda via TKO so far in the tournament. Meanwhile his counterpart, Tokoro fell to Daiki Hata in the opening round, but Hata was unable to continue on in the tourney due to injury, allowing Tokoro to replace him and submit Abel Cullum in his last fight.
Hata will return to action at DREAM.11 against Kazuyuki Miyata, winner of his last two fights. The matchup will serve as a reserve bout for the grand prix. The semifinals of the first-ever “Super Hulk” open-weight tournament will also take place at the event as well.
