I guess real stoppage is too much for network TV!

wtf is up? Was that 3 or 4 stoppages of a slightly rocked opponent?

If this is Network MMA I will keep watching it on Spike…

They need to FIRE Dan Miragliota. The president of EliteXC bought him off! First the early stand up, then the early stoppage.
Thompson would’ve won a decison or BEAT Kimbo on the ground. The early stand up led to the early stoppage. That wannabe Goldberg ref should be fired and his ref license taken away forever!

Some sh*t, how Bret Rogers KO’s Thompson FAST, and he doesn’t get the Kimbo fight.
They say he’s the “real deal”. Real deal my ass. I lost a LOT of respect for Bas Rutten. Also, I think he’s the one who said to pop Thompson in his cauliflower ear.

Dude !! Did you not see that Thompson was CLEARLY out on his feet? He took a poke at the ref for f***s! He had no clue where he was.

Well the point is people that on the ground thompson would of won, but on the stand up kimbo had the fight in his hands. All kimbo has to do is fix his ground skills… that’s all. But anyways feel sorry for thompson cus he was bigger than kimbo and still kimbo knocked him the f*ck out!!!  KIMBO ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

They stopped the “stalemate” on the ground as Kimbo is getting pounded in the face claiming there was no action.  The ref should be disbarred for being so influenced over Kimbo by whomever it was that influenced him.  Kimbo would have lost had they not been stood back up.  Yes he stopped the fight correctly because Thompson was out on his feet but it should have never gotten to that point.

Am I mistaken or was that not the end of the round Ryan? Do you think that “the edge” was given to Kimbo because of all of the hype? I viewed the youtube videos, and he did fight some rather doughy guys. He knocked the piss out of Dreads. In the sanctioned arena, with some work, I think Kimbo will have a good run, But he is rather old in terms of mixed martial arts.

Am I the only one who’s more upset about the Lawler/Smith fight? That was turning out to be one of the best fights I’ve seen, and they stopped it for the dumbest reason.
If EliteXC doesn’t change their fucking refs and their “physicians”, I’m not watching that shit again. They ruined a good fucking card.

point for Anon ! It was shaping up indeed. I guess we will have to wait and see in the next fight between those two.

This was a joke event.  More fluff than fighting really.  What a bunch of bullshit.  2 bad stoppages in a row.  I hope CBS has learned a lesson from this.

As soon as I saw Busta Rhymes, I knew it was going to be a horrible event.  Gary Shaw should be kicked in the nuts.

Dan Miragliotta’s been pretty consistent about not letting fights get stale on the ground in the past. It’s not about stopping ground action, just keeping it going. This is something he mentioned to me in Trenton (BodogFight last year). I’ve seen him ref a few more times since then and I think he’s done a decent job.

I think getting them up to their feet at that point in the fight was the right move.

The stoppage did seem a little early, but probably only because Thompson wasn’t face down by that point.  His ear was flapping around, blood pouring from it and he took some monster shots; it looked like the right call after watching it a few more times.

Kimbo was in trouble a few times and made a few rookie mistakes.  That’ll have to end fast given his high profile, but he had a lot of heart and really battled through his mistakes.

For all of that, I have to write that the Lawler-Smith fight was the best fight of night. The end was a huge disappointment, and it was great of Smith to say that he’d rather be knocked out than have it end like that, but that would have been a bit of a tainted win by Lawler if it continued.  I thought it was big of Shaw to say he was going to award them both the win bonus, and obviously we’ll see that fight again, a possible headliner next time around.

In response to #4

He smacked the ref for being a jackass! The whole thing stunk of a fix! The only thing they didn’t count on was how bad it would look.
I even saw Kimbo tapping! and apparently I wasn’t the only one who caught that.

EliteXC is GARBAGE!

On Lawler/Smith, I actually called this! Not the poke, but I said what if someone gets an accidental groin shot, this is a 5 round fight. They’re gonna go over the time limit. They planned on someone getting KO’d in the 1st round.
It sucks how this fight panned out. Lawler had the eyepoke, and Smith who was hurt bad already, knew if he continued he’d more than likely get finished. So he told the docs he couldn’t see, TWICE. Of course the docs weren’t gonna let it continue! He said give me my 5 minutes and I’ll be fine. That on top of the board being ALL OVER these fights, any time something was ABOUT to happen, they called the fights.

This was a WEAK showing for primetime and an embarrassment for MMA. The only reason Shaw paid both fighters for winning, it’s good for business. Plus, what was he gonna do pay them both losing wage salaries?

What was worse, were the uneducated “fans” who were booing the best match of the night in the 1st round of Lawler and Smith! I couldn’t understand that.
What, because it was an ACTUAL fight, and not some 1 minute KO, it’s not interesting!??
basically the whole night was standup boxing. No ground game was shown, no wrestling, no submissions.
If these people want to see a bar fight, go to one.
I think that’s what disgusted me the most about the whole thing.

Also on a final note, Thompson’s cauliflower ear looked REALLY BAD coming in. How come it wasn’t taped up in case it did pop.
I think that ALSO was an out for Kimbo. In case he was getting beat, hit that BIG “EASY BUTTON”, blood comes out and ref can stop it.

This whole thing smelled of set up.

Kimbo got 6 figures for this fight!??
His purse should go to Thompson.
I’d like to see what Thompson made compared to Kimbo, and how much they paid that ref Miragliotti to throw the fight. He should stick to reffing fights in the Yamma.

Yes, I agree that the stoppage was early and the ground game was not given enough time to evolve into any type of submission work. But let’s face it…What we experienced last night was a introduction to the ‘rest’ of the nation into MMA. I would have liked to see the banner “Elite XC, MMA for Dummies”.

If Elite XC wants to be taken seriously, they need to stop the gimmicks (Busta Rhymes, Dancing girls, etc.) The fights will bring the croud, ratings…if they are allowed to go the distance.

What I have the hardest time understanding is why is a guy with 3 MMA matches headlining a event? Yeah, it’s Kimbo I know. BUT WTF. If I was Robbie Lawler and was told that my belt title defence was on the line and I would not be the last fight of the night….Personally, I would ask for my contract to be revoked. That to me was the biggest unjustified MMA event of the evening.

I usually am not one to yell fix or complain about results. But this week in ALL sports has me in an uproar. 1st Lakers vs. Celtics??? Obviously the NBA is trying to make up for the poor ratings of last years finals by providing the two most popular teams for the finals. If you watched the games, it was obvious. 2nd, this event was piss poor after watching an excellent ppv last weekend. The only match that didn’t end questionably was the woman’s which was also the most brutal, and entertaining. The Kimbo fight was an obvious fix, gotta protect that cash cow. The Lawler/Smith fight was awesome, but do you really think Showtime would let the title change hands on ABC? Remember, they’ve been ruining boxing for years, MMa is just new territory. The Brett Rogers ko wasn’t a ko but a knockdown, no doubt Thompson was hurt, but who hasn’t seen peope comeback from much more deadly circumstances. Bad business. Elite XC is a joke. I didn’t believe it after the Shamrock/Le fight but my eyes are open now.

Watching Baroni mosey to the ring pissed me off severely. I was actually yelling “Get the fuck in the cage already!” Thank God Smokin’ Joe finished him quickly.
Carano/Young was an excellent fight. Would have been topped by the Lawler/Smith bout had that not been stopped early - which was beyond bullshit.
Slice was the straw that broke the camel’s back. What a joke. I felt embarrassed watching that shit. I seriously apologized to my Dad for making him watch the event with me, thinking it’d be decent. That felt fake as all hell. Gary Shaw clearly does not give a shit about fighters, unless they’re the ones he has fixed to win. All he cares about is lining his own pockets with gold.
As much as I hate to say this, Dana White has been right all along. Shaw is just a fat idiot who doesn’t care about the sport, and Slice is fake.

Hell while I’m at it, Brett Rogers didn’t impress me a bit, either. As said, he didn’t really TKO his opponent, he just knocked him down. Had he not shown defense on the ground, THEN it should have been called. Then he’s got the audacity to say he belonged in the main event, especially after being announced to Busta Rhymes? And then the crap in the press conference? The only reason nobody cares is, well, NOBODY CARES about you, Rogers. Shut your pie hole too.
I also noticed how they were favoring Baroni. He was getting beat pretty badly, but it took them longer to stop him than anyone. Has Smokin’ Joe been on the other end, they undoubtedly would have stopped the fight to protect “Shaw’s favorite”. Fuck you, Shaw! Get the fuck out of MMA.

Dan Miragliotta definately proved he has a price.. and for that he should be barred from these events. The kimbo fight was set up.. Johnson was sent in there to lose and when he was winning they dropped the ball.. I will never watch another EliteXc fight and I hope Tito and anyone else considering the move reconsiders cuz they dont have a future putting on matches like that.. Id rather watch water polo then EliteXc..

BAN ELITE XC FOR LIFE… EVERYONE BAN BAN BAN BAN BAN BAN BAN BAN BAN//

DREAM, UFC AND AFFLICTION REAP THE REWARDS OF THIS, BUT NOW HAVE TO PICK UP THE PEICES OF THIS TERRIBLE MESS..
