Edwin Dewees’ struggles continue as the mixed martial arts veteran was stopped by highly touted Canadian prospect Cory MacDonald at Phoenix Fighting Promotions debut event.
The crowd at the Halifax Forum in Halifax, Nova Scotia saw MacDonald, who was fighting for the first time in his career at middleweight, slip out of multiple submission attempts by Dewees in the bout.
After Dewees was unable to make his opponent tap from a kneebar, he lifted his legs up in a triangle attempt. The decision proved costly as MacDonald used Dewees open guard to transition to the mount position. MacDonald then rained down a flurry of punches that forced Dewees to roll to his back in order to avoid damage.
MacDonald got on top of Dewees but opted to pound away at the Phoenix, Arizona native rather then try for a choke from behind. MacDonald swung away with unanswered shots until the referee had no choice but to step in and halt the bout. Dewees was visibly upset afterwards but failed to intelligently protect himself during the last few moments of the fight.
