Although Thomas Denny’s advantage on the ground gave him a clear path to earn an easy win over talented Muay Thai champion Malaipet Sitprapom last night, it was a trio of illegal elbows by Sitprapom that earned him a first-round disqualification in the main event of the latest edition of ShoXC: Elite Challenger Series.
With his opponent having superior skills on the feet, Denny decided to take Sitprapom down to the canvas just seconds after unleashing a quick flurry of punches in the opening moments of the fight. Sitprapom immediately tried to stand back up but ended up giving Denny his back.
The King of the Cage veteran looked to have the fight in the bag with a deep rear naked choke but Sitprapom was amazingly able to escape the hold. Turning his back to the mat, Sitprapom then found himself trapped in a Denny arm-triangle but was able to work his way out of that submission as well. With his counterpart squirming to get back up, Denny started to rain down a mix of punches and elbows.
Denny’s ground and pound assault proved effective until the final thirty seconds of the round, when Sitprapom (3-2) was finally able to stand back up. After a very brief exchange on the feet, Denny (26-16) shot back down for a takedown.
From there Sitprapom landed three downward-pointed elbows to the back of Denny’s head, stunning him and sending him crumpling to the ground in pain. The bout was halted and after a few moments of deliberation, the ring-side doctor announced that Denny would be unable to continue, making him the victor by way of disqualification.
“I’m sorry because I came here to fight, but this is MMA and you have to follow the rules,’’ Denny said after the fight. “I may have been dazed but I wasn’t knocked out. One thing I could not do, however, was move my neck. Malaipet was tough because I thought I had him with the rear naked choke. But I will definitely fight him again. I was totally dominating.’’
Denny’s opponent shared similar feelings.
“I definitely want to fight him again,’’ Sitprapom said. “If he wants to do it at 150 pounds, I’ll fight him any time, any place. This wasn’t my type of fight. But there was no way I was ever going to tap out.’’
