WEC 38 made official
WEC has announced that their next event following tomorrow night’s show will take place in San Diego on January 25, 2009.
World Extreme Cagefighting® today announced that for the first event of 2009, the cage will head west to the hotbed of mixed martial arts - California - to hold the first ever WEC® event in San Diego. Two blockbuster matchups will lead the main card, with the World Lightweight Championship fight between Jamie Varner and undefeated Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone as the main event, and the mega-rematch pitting Urijah Faber against Jens Pulver in the co-main event. World Extreme Cagefighting, featuring Varner vs. Cerrone and Faber vs. Pulver 2, takes place live from the San Diego Sports Arena on Sunday, January 25, 2009.
Aoki vs Alvarez on NYE?
That’s the report coming out of Sherdog. Grappling wizard Shinya Aoki may be taking on Eddie Alvarez at the K-1 Dynamite mega show set for New Years Eve. Aoki and Alvarez was originally set to face off in the finals of the Dream Lightweight Grand Prix finals, but injuries suffered by Alvarez during his semi final win over Kawajiri prevented him from continuing. Alternate Joachim Hansen took his place and defeated Aoki in a mild upset.
Monte Cox, the agent for Alvarez said negotiations are ongoing at this time.
Tim Sylvia wants Ken Shamrock?
That’s the word off Sherdog as well. Sylvia stated he would like to fight at one of the big NYE shows in Japan, but is also really actively looking to fight Ken Shamrock early next year.
“I love to fight and a fight’s a fight,” said Sylvia. “He’s a Hall of Famer. He’s a legend. To progress your career you always have to fight somebody like that. I don’t know if he’s a stepping stone or anything, but he’s been on some of the same cards I’ve been on and he’s been highlighted over me, so I want to let people that I am better than this guy and there’s no reason he should have been highlighted over me.”
How the mighty have fallen. Seriously, Sylvia wants Shamrock? That’s ridiculous in my opinion.
Miller to step in for injured Edgar
Jim Miller has agreed to step in for fellow New Jersey product Frankie Edgar for his fight with Matt Wiman at the upcoming UFC Fight for the Troops on December 10. Edgar has pulled out with an undisclosed injury. 5 Ounces of Pain was the first to report this.
Miller is 1-0 in the Octagon after a very successful stint in the IFL. Wiman has quietly been on a streak of his own, having gone 4-0 in the UFC since his stint on the Ultimate Fighter. This should really be a very competitive fight.
