Call me a dumbass, but I thought that the WEC was owned by Zuffa?

You are not a dumbass. Well, maybe you are, but not for the reason above.
Zuffa does indeed own both the UFC and WEC. However, a fighter’s contract is with each promotion, not with the parent company of Zuffa. If a fighter signs a contract with the UFC, its for fights guaranteed to be in the UFC.
BTW, if I remember correctly, John Alessio may have done the same thing in forfeiting the remaining two fights on his UFC contract and transferring them to the WEC.

Some outlets are reporting that Hominick’s debut in the WEC on June 3rd will be against Urijah Faber. Given Hominick’s credentials and recent callouts of Faber, this is likely the case. The WEC does not yet have an established pecking order in their divisions so first time participants can be given a title shot right away. Faber’s last opponent, Dominick Cruz, is an example.
And what better way to kick off the first live televised WEC on Versus than with a Hominick-Faber war.
