Former UFC middleweight champion and longtime PRIDE veteran Murilo Bustamante is scheduled to return to action at Global Fighting’s upcoming event on June 21st in Charlotte.
The organization officially announced the event this afternoon along with Bustamante’s participation.
Bustamante, one of the founding members of Brazilian Top Team, became the second middleweight title holder in the history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship when he stopped then-champ Dave Menne with strikes at UFC 35: Throwdown in January 2002.
He successfully defended his title five months later against Matt Lindland before leaving the UFC over a dispute concerning the financial terms of his contract. Bustamante signed with PRIDE Fighting Championships shortly after and ended up losing his first three bouts with the promotion.
Bustamante would rebound by winning three straight fights but has struggled since then. He last dropped a close split decision to Makoto Takimoto at Yarennoka! on New Year’s Eve.
Global Fighting’s event will be headlined by a heavyweight clash between former UFC heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman and fellow veteran Jeff Monson. Josh Haynes, a cast member on the third season of “The Ultimate Fighter” is also slated to compete on the card.
