A lightweight bout between international veteran David Baron and “Ultimate Fighter 5” alumnus Rob Emerson is reportedly likely for UFC 101, which is currently slated to take place on August 8 at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.
The news comes from a report by MMA Weekly.
After a lengthy career that had him fighting in various places around the world, Baron punched his ticket to the UFC with an upset of former pound-for-pound phenom Hayato “Mach” Sakurai at Shooto’s “Tradition” show last May. The France native fell in his UFC debut to Jim Miller via third-round submission at UFC 89 in his last bout.
Emerson’s rise up the UFC lightweight ladder was stopped by jiu-jitsu ace Kurt Pellegrino, who submitted Emerson at UFC Fight Night 17 in February. After fighting to a no-contest against Gray Maynard in his UFC debut two years ago, Emerson went on to record consecutive wins over Keita Nakamura and Manny Gamburyan before falling to Pellegrino.
UFC 101 is expected to be headlined by B.J. Penn defending his UFC lightweight title against top contender Kenny Florian. Former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin will return to action against Thiago Silva at the event as well.
