“Babalu” vs. Sokoudjou Added to “Day of Reckoning”

Affliction Entertainment has added a light heavyweight bout to its upcoming “Day of Reckoning” show on January 24 as UFC and PRIDE Fighting Championships veteran Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou will face Renato “Babalu” Sobral on the event’s televised main card.

The bout is currently listed on the event’s official website, however various sources are reporting that Affliction VP Tom Atencio has stated that the bout is not yet official - both fighters have agreed to fight, but bout agreements and additional paperwork have yet to be completed.

Sokoudjou, who currently trains at Team Quest’s Temecula, California location along with Dan Henderson, joins the Affliction stable of fighters following his recent release from the UFC, where he went 1-2 over the past year.

“The African Assassin” fell to undefeated light heavyweight sensation Lyoto Machida in his UFC debut last December, but rebounded with an impressive win over fellow judo expert Kazuhiro Nakamura this past spring. Sokoudjou recently fell to Luis Arthur Cane, who scored a second-round TKO over him at UFC 89.

Meanwhile Sobral has flourished since his release from the UFC over a year ago, racking up three straight victories and claiming Strikeforce’s light heavyweight belt with a TKO win over Bobby Southworth at the promotion’s “Destruction” event just three weeks ago. “Babalu” was victorious at Affliction’s first-ever event in July, winning a hard-fought unanimous decision over Xtreme Couture’s Mike Whitehead.

I half wonder if Sokoudjou is going to perform better than he did in the UFC being in a ring again and under a new banner. I don’t know what it is about Pride fighters going to the UFC, but I honestly have a hard time believing the UFC fighters were THAT much better than some of these Pride guys. Obviously some flourished, some apparently mentally scarred (CroCop), and Sokoudjou just seemed sub par.

Hopefully if he delivers lackluster performance, by all means pour on the “Affliction is full of UFC rejects” talk. But honestly as of this point I think that talk is unfounded with too many factors to figure in.

Case in point, how well would a guy like Couture do in Affliction? Probably not very, cause he couldn’t hold people against the ropes as well as he could a cage. Does that make him a bad fighter though? Not really, as long as he’s in the UFC.

I’m hoping Affliction stays up. They put on a good show earlier in the year and Day or Reckoning will be good as well. Fucking typical MMA fans though shit all over it with their 5-second attention spans. It was talked about for a good month afterwards, then slowly people started talking about them going out of business and sneering that Affliction can’t roll with the big boys. Fuck all of you that said that. You’re not MMA fans, you’re UFC fans. I want to see the guys that aren’t in the UFC too.

Also, for the record, I enjoy the UFC too. My point is fighters perform better depending on their environment, and I don’t want to ONLY see the UFC (& WEC).

imo banned substances were not as strictly tested for in pride as they are in the states.  i believe that is the root of the pride fall off.

Babalu is one of the nastiest 205lb fighters in the world and is obviously well rounded. Sick jits, above average standup.. Soko is gonna have a hard time with anything that Babalu puts on him. But another great fight put forward by Affliction.
