Strikeforce officials have announced that Renato “Babalu” Sobral will defend his Strikeforce light heavyweight title against Gegard Mousasi at Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg at San Jose, California’s HP Pavilion on Saturday, August 15.
Babalu and Mousasi were originally set to square off at Affliction: Trilogy on August 1 but when Affliction closed up shop, Strikeforce jumped at the opportunity adding the bout to an already stacked card.
“I am very happy that Strikeforce has resurrected this fight and I will have the opportunity to become Strikeforce world champion,” said Mousasi. “Strikeforce is one of the world’s top promotions and I am proud to be a part of their roster of world-class fighters.”
Following the cancellation of “Trilogy”, Mousasi expressed interest in fighting for the UFC. While the UFC is on his radar, Mousasi currently has contracts with Strikeforce and DREAM that he’ll be required to fulfil.
Babalu, current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, is currently riding a five-fight winning streak which includes victories over David Heath, Mike Whitehead, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou, and Bobby Southworth.
