Current WEC lightweight champion Hermes Franca will make his return to the UFC on July 8th at UFC 61, taking on Roger Huerta.
“I got a call from Joe Silva like Monday, so I could not cancel this WEC fight,” explained Franca. “I won my first fight in 2006 in the WEC. Scott Adams has been good to me and I have the belt, so I want to do a good job for them and fight.”
“In the UFC, there’s a lot of young, tough guys,” commented Hermes. “Mark Hominick, Jorge Gurgel, Spencer Fisher… they’re coming on, so what can you do? It will be like the old man versus the new kid.”
Pride announced two major signings today in the form of Vitor Belfort and Yoshihiro Nakao. Belfort will take on Yoshiki Takahashi at Critical Countdown Absolute 2006. Many recognize Nakao from his infamous pre-fight staredown with Heath Herring in which Nakao kissed him on the lips only to be knocked out by a Herring right hand immediately after.
The WFA has announced that Bill Goldberg will serve as the color commentator for the organization’s upcoming PPV, WFA: King of the Streets on July 22nd. Goldberg has an extensive background in MMA, training in Muay Thai for many years…
Today the UFC announced that jiu-jitsu stars Jeff Monson and Anthony Perosh will fight at UFC 61 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
This past weekend at King of the Cage: Mangler Bobby Hoffman was slated to square off against Wes Sims. Unfortunately for Sims, Hoffman proved to be a no show forcing KOTC to sever all ties with Bobby Hoffman.
It seems that King of the Cage will be stepping off of that roller coaster, finally severing ties with their former champion. Said Williams, “We’re done with Hoffman. We are now severing ties with the Bad Seed.”
Today the UFC announced two lightweight fights that are set to take place at UFC 61 and Ultimate Fight Night 06/28. ‘The Ultimate Fighter II’ star Jorge Gurgle is set to take on Team Tompkins trained Mark “The Machine” Hominick and ‘The Ultimate Fighter II’ champion Joe Stevenson will take on UFC and PRIDE vet Yves Edwards.
Just over one week ago Ryo Chonan went to war and won a split decision over Joey Villasenor. Unfortunately for Chonan, he suffered multiple fractures around the orbital bone. The severity of the injury at this point is unknown but this may force Chonan out of the second round of the Bushido Grand Prix which is set to take place August 26th.
Today the UFC officially announced four more bouts that are set to take place on the June 28th Ultimate Fight Night card. The former UFC middleweight champion Dave Menne will go up against Josh Koscheck in a welterweight battle, Branden Lee Hinkle will move down to 205 lbs to face Jason Lambert, Jon Fitch will take on Thiago Alves and ‘The Ultimate Fighter II’ finalist Luke Cummo will go up against the very tough Jonathan Goulet.
Marvin Eastman won a re-match decision over Jason Guida and walked away with the WEF Light-Heavyweight Championship.
This weekend’s King of the Cage show in San Jacinto, California went on without a main event as reports are stating Bobby Hoffman failed to show up for his scheduled match against Wes Sims. Sims took the fight on short notice, one week after losing to Daniel Gracie.
