WEC middleweight title holder Paulo Filho came in an astounding seven pounds over the 185 lb. limit at the weigh-ins for WEC 36 on Tuesday afternoon, putting his championship rematch against Team Quest product Chael Sonnen in jeopardy.

After the two-hour allotted time limit, Filho was only able to cut down to 188 lbs, making his showdown against Sonnen a non-title affair. Sonnen will be awarded 25% of Filho’s purse.

In addition, featherweight title challenger Mike Brown came in a half pound over the featherweight limit and jiu-jitsu wizard Rani Yahya weighed-in one pound over the bantamweight requirements for his fight against Yoshiro Maeda. Brown was quickly able to shed the extra baggage while Maeda has agreed to face Yahya without forcing him to cut weight again.

Changes Finalize WEC 36 Card

Two changes to separate preliminary fights have finalized the fight card for this week’s WEC 36 event, which will take place on Wednesday, November 5 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

Former “Ultimate Fighter” cast member Alex Schoenauer was forced to withdraw from his scheduled bout against Steve Steinbeiss after tearing his hamstring during a recent training session. Schoenauer was actually a replacement for light heavyweight prospect Mark Munoz who also injured during his preparation for Steinbeiss. The Argentinan will be replaced by a fellow UFC veteran, American Kickboxing Academy product Carmello Marrero.

He may not have been hit by the injury bug prior to Wednesday’s show, but Ed Ratcliff has been removed from the undercard for unknown reasons. Ratcliff was slated to take on Danny Castillo, who will now try to pick up his first WEC win against newcomer Rafael Dias, a veteran that has competed for the likes of BodogFight and the IFL in the past. The updated lineup for the event is after the jump.

Alex Schoenauer, one of the original cast members of Spike TV’s “The Ultimate Fighter”, will reportedly replace an injured Mark Munoz against Steve Steinbeiss at World Extreme Cagefighting’s September 10th event in Hollywood, Florida according to MMA Weekly.

Munoz was forced off of the card after suffering a knee injury during a recent training session. It was unknown at the time whether or not WEC officials would attempt to find a replacement opponent for Steinbeiss, who will be making his debut with the promotion.

Schoenauer, who was recently one of multiple fighters brought in to compete for the California-based Palace Fighting Championship, fell in his bid for the IFL’s light heavyweight title last December, losing a decision to eventual champion Vladimir Matyushenko. He last won a split decision over Brendan Barrett in April.

Steinbeiss spent the early stages of his career under the BodogFight banner, winning two out of his three bouts in the promotion, including an impressive first-round TKO of HDNet Fights veteran Jeff Ford. He most recently defeated Francisco Alcanter at a Rock & Sock Promotions event in June.

Reports: MacDonald to Replace Day at UFC 88

Jason Day has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled middleweight bout against Jason Lambert at UFC 88 after suffering an arm injury during a recent training session. He will reportedly be replaced by fellow Canadian veteran Jason MacDonald according to Sherdog.com.

Day suffered an elbow and biceps injury that will keep him out of action for an indefinite period of time states MMA Weekly. He is scheduled to have an MRI on his arm in the coming days, which is expected to give him a time-frame for his recovery.

Following his disappointing submission loss to Demian Maia at UFC 87 last month, MacDonald will be stepping in to face Lambert, who will be making his middleweight debut at the event, on short notice with a little less than three weeks of training time.

Report: Munoz-Steinbeiss Signed for WEC 36

Mark Munoz. Photo property of World Extreme Cagefighting.

A light heavyweight bout between former NCAA wrestling champion Mark Munoz and Arizona Combat Sports product Steve Steinbeiss has reportedly been signed to take place at a planned World Extreme Cagefighting event on September 10th.

The news comes from MMA Weekly, which has confirmed with sources from within Steinbeiss’ camp that bout agreements have been signed. The fight will be the first on an apparent multi-fight deal that Steinbeiss has signed with the promotion.

Munoz, a heralded wrestler out of Oklahoma State University, remains undefeated thus far in his professional career. He was victorious in his WEC debut back in June, scoring a first-round stoppage of Chuck Grigsby. Munoz currently trains alongside reigning WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber.

Steinbeiss spent the early stages of his career under the BodogFight banner, winning two out of his three bouts in the promotion, including an impressive first-round TKO of HDNet Fights veteran Jeff Ford. He most recently defeated Franchesca Alcanter at a Rock & Sock Promotions event in June.
