OROVILLE - Shawn Bias is on his way to making a full recovery from injuries allegedly sustained in a recent struggle with Oroville police.

The former Palace Fighting Championship World Featherweight champion was released from the Oroville Hospital on Wednesday and spoke about his incident for the first time.

Bias allegedly ran from officers outside an apartment complex in Oroville at about 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 20. Oroville police were called to investigate a disturbance and upon making contact with the 22-year-old mixed martial artist, Bias reportedly ran and ignored orders from police to stop or be shot by a taser.

According to the Chico Enterprise Recorder, Bias was eventually caught by two officers and was tased a total of five times according to Oroville Police Chief Kirk Trostle. Some of the tasings were “drive stuns” which involves the taser making direct contact with the victim.

Bias was restrained and taken to the Oroville Hospital where he was treated for a heart attack and went into kidney failure.

“There was a lot of unnecessary tasing and use of force against me. Someone with not as much will or training might have died,” Bias said. “A parent could be mourning over their child right now. The police didn’t know I was a cage fighter and that shouldn’t matter. They knew nothing about me.”

After being given a 30% of living by doctors, former Palace Fighting Championship featherweight champion Shawn Bias has awoken from a two-day coma after suffering a heart attack late Saturday night according to Sherdog.com.

The 22-year-old suffered the heart attack just two days after losing his title to Art Arciniega after being submitted with a triangle choke at PFC 6: No Retreat, No Surrender last week and then lapsed into a coma the next day.

The attack was brought on by an altercation with Oroville police, who reportedly tastered Bias up to five times and struck him with batons according to close friend, training partner, and fellow mixed martial artist George Adkins.

Doctors have also diagnosed Bias with kidney failure and he has been placed on dialysis, which will serve as an artifical replacement for Bias’ kidneys. Bias suffered very little damage during the fight, however those close to Bias stated that he was ill days before the fight but refused to pull out of the bout.

A toxicology report showed Bias was under the influence of a controlled substance when he encountered police according to his mother, Christine Bias.

Update 1/21 12:03 PM: Sherdog’s Josh Gross has found that Bias was tasered and beaten before being arrested by Oroville police late Saturday evening, thus causing his heart attack and liver failure:

George Adkins, a training partner and close friend of Bias, told Sherdog.com that Bias was fighting for his life because Oroville Police Department officers Tasered Bias up to five times and struck him repeatedly with batons.

According to Adkins, who cited police, eyewitness and medical personnel accounts, Bias knocked on the door to the wrong party Saturday evening. Though Adkins said he didn’t know why, police were called to the scene. After finding his intended destination (another apartment in the complex) Bias purportedly went outside to apologize to officers who arrived on scene.

“Shawn allegedly took off running,” said Adkins, who acknowledged that he did not know of anyone who witnessed the incident from its inception. “They ended up getting him, and we don’t know exactly how or why he ended up being Tasered several times and struck several times.”
