RIO DE JANEIRO – Once again the worlds’ only true Vale Tudo tournament gave mixed martial arts fans a reason to come back for more. With a packed house cheering them on, eight Brazilian bare-knuckle gladiators kicked, punched and choked each other for a shot at the RioHeroes 14 Super Lightweight Championship.
In the first qualifier, Leiarte Azevedo toyed with Fabio Oliveira before dispatching Fabio with a right hook that sent him head first into the canvas. Crowd favorite, Ivanildo “Cafu” Santos, made quick work of Ricardo Caetano by finishing him in a choke hold just minutes into the second qualifying match.
In the third bout of the evening, newcomer D’Angelo Viera used a series of devastating right hand punches and elbows to knock Isaac Tavares out of the tournament. Newcomer Marcelo Franca proved no match for reigning Super Lightweight Champ William Viana, who showed he was on the top of his game in the fourth qualifier of the evening.

The four quarterfinal matchups to start the night are as follows:
Ivanildo Santos vs. Leiarte Azevedo
Flavio Alvaro vs. Ivan Max Iberico Celis
Paulo Silva vs. Udi Lima
Andre Luis de Oliveira vs. Miguel Angel Duran Avad
The first bout between Santos and Azevedo is a rematch of a fight that originally happened at Rio Heroes 9, where the two fought to a no contest after Santos’ eye was damaged because of an eye-gouge attempt by Azevedo. Former Rio Heroes Middleweight Champion Flavio Alvaro will drop down to lightweight for the first time in his career and take on Ivan Celis who will be making his Rio Heroes debut.
Silva will attempt to build on the momentum he earned by nearly winning Rio Heroes 9 in September when he faces off against Udi Lima. Silva and Lima fought in July at Rio Heroes 6 where Lima submitted Silva with a triangle. The final quarterfinal bout features Oliveira and Avad both making their Rio Heroes debut. The two sport completely different backgrounds as Oilveria is a well-renowned club fighter while Avad has made his rounds practicing Muay Thai around the world.
We will have full results following the event later tonight.
