WEC veteran Kevin Knabjian picked up a big win over former cast member of the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter Josh Rafferty the Xtreme Fighting Organization’s “Rising Star” event this past weekend in Crystal Lake, Illinois.
Both were originally scheduled to compete in separate fights but the inability of XFO officials to find a suitable opponent in time for Knabijan left no other option but to pair the two veterans together in the night’s main event.
Rafferty, who is usually known for his lack of a ground game, quickly took Knabjian down and secured his back to start the fight. After locking in a rear naked choke and holding it on for nearly half a minute, Knabjian was able to sneak his way out of the hold.
From there Knabjian secured top position and then unleashed a vicious ground and pound assault that forced the referee to step in and stop the fight, ending Rafferty’s three-fight winning streak.
Pat Curran, the cousin of top-ranked featherweight Jeff Curran, was victorious in his professional mixed martial arts debut at the show, using superior wrestling to eventually submit Tony Hervey with a choke from behind in the first round.
