The Daily Recap: Cyborg Can’t Make 135, Dos Santos Partners With Nike & More

It looks like there is another hurdle to overcome before we'll finally see a super fight between Cris Cyborg and Ronda Rousey. Cyborg’s camp is saying that their fighter visited with her heart doctor and a cut to 135lbs is not safe based on her personal physical health. According to the report, Cyborg walks around at 160lbs and the cut could prohibit Cyborg from carrying a child in the future. [MMAWeekly]

Ronda Rousey’s camp wasted no time formulating a response stating that if you talk to five doctors, you’ll get five different opinions. In regards to moving up to 145lbs, Rousey’s manager Doug Harvey told Yahoo! Sports, “At the end of the day, it’s up to Ronda. I would advise against it because I would like to do everything to get Cyborg down to 135 pounds, but I know it’s the fight the world wants to see.”

It Looks Like Frank Mir Could Step in to Face Junior dos Santos

So now that Alistair Overeem is likely going to be forced out of what would have been one hell of an exciting UFC heavyweight title bout against Junior dos Santos next month, who is going to step in to take his place?

Pushing a rematch with Cain Velaquez aside, the only other contender on a win streak right now would be former champion Frank Mir, who has to know that he may be asked to move from his UFC 146 clash with Velasquez to the main event at any moment now. In fact, he does. From an official statement he put out this evening:

"I would be excited if given the opportunity to compete for the UFC's heavyweight title at UFC 146 if the reports released earlier today regarding Alistair Overeem failing his 'A' sample drug test are true," Mir is quoted as saying in the statement.

"I have been fortunate to be able to fight in the UFC for more than a decade, and it is a dream of mine to become the first three-time heavyweight champion in the UFC. Being able to fight Junior Dos Santos would put me one step closer to that dream."

It's also interesting to note that in a response to a fan on Twitter that brought up Mir as a potential replacement for Overeem, UFC President Dana White said that he "couldn't disagree" with Mir as the answer.

UFC Targeting JDS-Overeem, Potential Silva-Sonnen Rematch for Summer

UFC President Dana White has revealed that his organization is currently looking at summer dates for a UFC heavyweight title showdown between champion Junior dos Santos and challenger Alistair Overeem as well as a potential rematch between longtime middleweight king Anderson Silva and bitter rival Chael Sonnen.

The UFC's head honcho commented on the matchups during last night's premiere episode of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV. According to White, the UFC is looking at holding the heavyweight title fight at some point in the summer. If Sonnen were to get past Mark Munoz at UFC on Fox 2 later this month, the same could be said for the middleweight division's biggest grudge match.

"Hopefully, this summer. This summer is probably when it's going to go down," White said of dos Santos and Overeem. "Alistair wants to take some time off. Junior is ready but needs to get some training in. So hopefully, this summer."

Up until the ending sequence, the bout didn’t feature much action. Belfort (19-8) and Franklin (25-5) exchanged leg kicks and short jabs, but neither put together any offense of note that landed.
