The Daily Recap: Volkmann-Sass Set for UFC 146, UFC 144 on Free TV in Japan & More

A lightweight bout between outspoken wrestler Jacob Volkmann and submission artist Paul Sass has been booked for UFC 146 on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Volkmann has won five straight UFC fights, his most recent a unanimous decision over Efrain Escudero in December. Sass last submitted Michael Johnson with a heel hook at UFC on Versus 6 in October. He has won eight of his twelve pro fights by triangle choke. [UFC.com]

Just a handful of days before UFC 144, the organization has struck a deal with TV Tokyo to air a compressed, tape-delay version of the event on network television in Japan. TV Tokyo is reportedly avaiable in 32 million households. The last UFC event to air on the channel was UFC Fight Night 21 in March 2010, which saw Takanori Gomi fall to Kenny Florian. [Sherdog]

UFC on FUEL TV Video Highlights

Courtesy of FOX Sports, here are some video highlights of last night's fights from the inaugural UFC on FUEL TV event, which saw hometown boy Jake Ellenberger outlast Diego Sanchez to earn a unanimous decision over three rounds in the main event.

Ellenberger Outlasts Sanchez at First-Ever UFC on FUEL TV Show

Jake Ellenberger took all he could handle from tenacious veteran Diego Sanchez but ended up earning a unanimous decision in front of his hometown crowd in the main event of the first-ever UFC on FUEL TV event in Ellenberger's hometown of Omaha, Nebraska on Wednesday night.

The fight capped off an action-packed card at what looked to be a sold-out Omaha Civic Auditorium. The partisan crowd saw Ellenberger take one step closer to a UFC welterweight title shot with his six straight win in the division.

Ellenberger, who currently trains alongside Mark Munoz at Reign MMA, controlled the fight early on, frustrated Sanchez with good footwork and a steady diet of jabs and strong right hands. An always game Sanchez remained in the pocket and tried to keep up with his foe, landing occasional shots.

Previewing UFC on Fuel 1: The Main Card

Fresh off of an event last weekend, the UFC is getting right back into the swing of things with a special Wednesday show, their first-ever on FUEL TV. Luckily for Comcast subscribers and other who don’t have/aren’t able to get the network, this week is a free preview week and a lot of carriers are taking part.

So two days from now Jake Ellenberger is going to put his status at a top contender in the UFC’s welterweight division on the line against hard-nosed veteran Diego Sanchez, is who riding a win streak of his own and looking to return to the division’s upper-echelon.

UFC on Fuel TV 1 will also feature a heavyweight collision between Stefan Struve and Dave Herman as well as a middleweight battle pitting Aaron Simpson against Ronny Markes. Here’s a preview of the main card, which can be seen in its entirety after the jump.

— The UFC has confirmed a trio of fights for its inaugural trip to Houston, Texas this fall, signing the following bouts for UFC 136 on October 8: Melvin Guillard vs. Joe Lauzon, Demian Maia vs. Jorge Santiago and Dave Herman vs. Mike Russow. [UFC.com]

— UFC and EliteXC veteran Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson has been matched up against fellow newcomer James Wade for his boxing debut on August 13 at the Buffalo Run Casino in Miami, Oklahoma. "Just like in MMA, Kimbo Slice is walking around with bull's-eye on his back. His opponents know they can make themselves known to the world if they can take him out," said Jared Shaw, Team Kimbo Promotional Advisor in a press release. "To Kimbo it's a pro boxing debut. Herman Blasts Frye at Shark Fights 6

Former EliteXC heavyweight standout Dave Herman picked up what was arguably the biggest win of his young career on Saturday night, needing only a minute to dispatch of MMA pioneer Don Frye in the main event of Shark Fights 6 in Amarillo, Texas.

The elder Frye pushed for a takedown early on, but Herman was able to stay on his feet and battered the veteran with a flurry of punches that forced the quick stoppage. The win was the second in a row for Herman while Frye has now fallen in three of his last five appearances.

Weekend Preview: Arona Returns at Bitetti Combat, Horn Headlines Arena Rumble & More

Former PRIDE Fighting Championships standout Ricardo Arona will return to active competition for the first time in over two years when he takes on fellow veteran Marvin Eastman at Bitetti Combat 4 this Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It will be the first fight for Arona since losing three out of four bouts under the PRIDE banner, including a brutal knockout at the hands of a streaking Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at PRIDE 34 in April 2007. Eastman is coming off of a second-round TKO of Aron Lofton at a Maximum Fighting Championship show in May.

Alvarez Wins, Masvidal Upset at Bellator V

Philadelphia native Eddie Alvarez secured his spot in Bellator Fighting Championships’ first-ever lightweight tournament finals on Friday night, controlling upstart opponent Eric Reynolds for over twelve minutes before submitting him with a rear-naked choke in the third round of their main event attraction.

Strikeforce veteran Jorge Masvidal was expected to meet Alvarez in the finals but will instead be watching the remainder of the tourney as a spectator. Masvidal played down the skills of Toby Imada during the weeks before their semi-final fight, but ended up succumbing to an impressive modified triangle choke in the third round of their fight.

A number of notable veterans were also in action on Bellator’s fifth event. Former EliteXC heavyweight standout Dave Herman picked up a much-needed win over Josh Barnes. Dan Evensen also scored a second-round stoppage of Raoul Romero while fellow UFC veteran Sherman Pendergarst fell to Total Combat product Joey Beltran.

Santiago, Kitaoka Win Belts at Sengoku; Gomi Falls Again

Jorge Santiago and Satoru Kitaoka each claimed vacant belts in their respective divisions while former lightweight king Takanori Gomi continued his fall from grace, losing his second straight fight at World Victory Road’s “Sengoku No Ran 2009” event in Japan on Sunday.

Santiago choked former PRIDE Grand Prix winner Kazuo Misaki unconscious in the third round of their fight and picked up his ninth straight win. Kitaoka meanwhile, was victorious in arguably the biggest fight of his career, quickly submitting Gomi with a heel hook just over a minute into the show’s main event.

More details are coming out regarding a potential deal struck between promotional newcomer Bellator Fighting Championships and ESPN Deportes to produce a reality show that could air starting in April of next year. In turn, so is a list of fighters that may be involved with the show as well.

According to MMA Junkie, former EliteXC employees Hector Lombard and Dave Herman have both reportedly been sent offers from Bellator regarding their possible inclusion on the show. However talks are only in the preliminary stages.

Japanese-based World Victory Road has also indicated that they would like to use Herman on their “Sengoku VII” show in January. Two fighters that have competed overseas in the past year - Eddie Alvarez and Jorge Masvidal - round out the list of approached fighters known at this time.
