— Despite the UFC officially announcing Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann for UFC 130 in May, sources have stated that Silva will not be healthy enough to compete at the event and that the bout was announced prematurely, as the fight was never actually signed. — Jeffrey David Kirby was sentenced to nine years in prison today for his role in a March 2009 car crash that killed Tapout co-founder Charles "Mask Lewis. Kirby was convicted of one felony count of vehicular manslaughter by unlawful act with gross negligence while intoxicated in December. [MMAJunkie.com]

Bellator Semifinalist Carey Vanier Returns

CHICAGO, ILL.Bellator Fighting Championships today confirmed the addition of Bellator Season 2 Semifinalist Carey Vanier to its upcoming Season 4 Lightweight Tournament, airing live on MTV2 starting March 5th.

Vanier will be looking to carry the momentum from an impressive victory over dangerous UFC veteran Rich “No Love” Clementi at Bellator 28 into the Bellator Season 4 Lightweight Tournament for a chance at a check for $100,000 and a shot at Bellator World Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez.

“Carey’s been really impressive during his time with Bellator and constantly shows drastic improvements in his game.  His victory over Rich in Season #3 was a strong showing over a great fighter.  Carey’s a significant addition to our Lightweight Tournament,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.

— Former longtime PRIDE middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva will return from an extended layoff due to knee surgery at UFC 130 in May, facing upstart striker and military veteran Brian Stann. Silva last defeated Michael Bisping via unanimous decision at UFC 110 last February while Stann scored an impressive stoppage of Chris Leben at UFC 125 last month. [UFC.com]

— Strikeforce will reportedly indeed hold the rest of the quarterfinals of their heavyweight grand prix tournament on April 10 in Japan. The organization will work with Real Entertainment and M-1 to hold the event. A fight card consisting of heavyweight and lightweight bouts is planned. [MMA-Japan.com]

Bellator Inks UFC Vet Ben Saunders

CHICAGO, ILL.Bellator Fighting Championships today announced the singing of seven-time UFC veteran Ben “Killa B” Saunders to its already stacked welterweight roster. 

Although Saunders will not participate in the upcoming Welterweight Tournament, “Killa B” will make his Bellator debut during Season 4.  Bellator Season 4 airs live on MTV2 beginning Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 9 pm.

“Ben Saunders is an exciting, powerful welterweight with explosive knockout power.  Ben’s dangerous and always shows up to fight.  I’m excited to see his first fight under the Bellator banner on MTV2 in April.” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney.

McCullough Confirmed for Bellator Lightweights

CHICAGO, ILLFollowing confirmations of talent filled Welterweight, Featherweight and Light Heavyweight Tournaments for the promotion's highly anticipated fourth season,Bellator Fighting Championships has officially announced that the promotion will hold a Lightweight Tournament this March, live on MTV2.

Eight world class 155 lb. fighters will face off for a chance at claiming the Season 4 Lightweight Tournament Championship, a check for $100,000, and a shot at Bellator World Lightweight Champion and top ranked lightweight Eddie Alvarez.

While announcements regarding all eight participants will follow, former WEC Lightweight Champion “Razor” Rob McCullough has been confirmed for the upcoming tournament. The Huntington Beach-based knockout artist enters the Bellator cage with momentum on his side, going undefeated in 2010 and moving his record to an impressive 19-6.

— The California State Athletic Commission released the official list of medical suspensions and fighter payouts on Monday. Nick Diaz had the highest salary, banking $150,000 for his win over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, who received $20,000. Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza ($85,000), Robbie Lawler ($65,000) and Roger Gracie ($75,000) all took home big paydays as well. In addition, Lawler could be out up to six months due to a fractured left foot. — DREAM light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi has reportedly started the application process to be able to attempt to box at the 2012 Summer Olympic games in London, England. Mousasi would represent the country of Holland if he was to qualify. [MMAFA.tv]

Friere Added to Bellator FW Tourney

Highly-touted Brazilian prospect Patricio "Pitbull" Friere has been added to the list of competitors for Bellator Fighting Championships' season four featherweight tournament, which kicks off next month.

Friere is the seventh participant announced for the tourney, joining Wilson Reis, Daniel Strauss, Eric Larkin, Zac George, Kenny Foster and Georgi Karakhanyan.

"Patricio Pitbull is a great fighter," Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney said in a release. "He was seconds away from beating on of the top two featherweights on earth and that loss was his only defeat as a professional. I know that his sole focus is winning this tournament and earning the opportunity to avenge his loss to our champion, Joe Warren. He's going to be fun to watch this season."

Strikeforce held its first large-scale event of 2011 on Saturday night, featuring another card filled with entertaining fights and exciting finishes.

Nick Diaz retained his Strikeforce welterweight title with a hard-fought submission win over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza remained on top of the promotion's middleweight division, forcing a tap from Robbie Lawler in their championship bout.

— HDNet today added the undercard of Strikeforce's "Fedor vs. Silva" event to their scheduled lineup for February 12. The event kicks off the organization's much-anticipated heavyweight grand prix tournament. Preliminary bouts shown by HDNet will feature Igor Gracie and Sam Oropeza among others. [MMA Junkie]

— A lightweight bout between "TUF 2" winner Joe Stevenson and WEC veteran Danny Castillo has been inked for UFC on Versus 3, which is slated for March 3 in Louisville, KY. Reis Confirmed for Bellator’s Fourth Season

CHICAGO, ILL.Six-time Bellator veteran Wilson Reis will have a chance to become a nine-time vet in early 2011. Bellator Fighting Championships today confirmed Reis as the sixth competitor in the Bellator Season 4 Featherweight Tournament which airs live on MTV2 beginning in March 2011. Reis made it to the semifinal round of both the Season 1 and Season 2 Featherweight Tournaments and currently boasts a Bellator record of 4-2 with an overall record of 11-2.

Returning to the Bellator cage fresh off of an impressive victory over dangerous WEC veteran Deividas Taurosevicius at Bellator 33, the decorated submission specialist says that his time is now.

“I came up short in the first two tournaments and this is my chance to make things right,” said Reis. “I absolutely believe that I can win it, and that's why I decided to get involved this time around. I'm going to give it all I have, take it one fight at a time, and in every fight, do my best.”
